Just found this site/forum and subscribed. I recently got a Big Green Egg and I'm obsessed! My husband actually bought it- but it's turned out that I'm the one using it. I find the BGE a little touchy with temp control - but I'm new. I've made tons of things so far- while chicken, thighs, chicken sausage, Boston butt, pork loin, veggies, and even some awesome twice baked potatoes!
I'm in Tampa, FL.
Hope to consult you all on BBQ going forth!!

Well Hey jskippy, welcome to SMF!  The BGE is one nice brute of a grill/smoker that takes just a bit of use to master, but is easily done.  Sounds like you are deliciously on your way.  No fear of the gear.  Fantastic!

Happy smoking and look forward to seeing you around the threads with what's for dinner.

Have fun!

Dumb question to you pros- I'm sure. I hear of these "Polder" thermometers. I know I need one for internal meat and grill temp. I'm asking for a super thermometer for Xmas. What do you all recommend??

Polders are fine thermometers, but you want a wireless, dual probe thermometer, one for the meat and one for the chamber.  The most popular ones around here are made by Maverick/Redi Check/Ivation, all the same thermometer with different names.  There are two models, the 733, which is newer, and the 732 which is still the workhorse and my thermometer of choice.  The 733 runs about $60-70, the 732 about $10 less.

You put your transmitter with the food/chamber probes at the smoker and keep the receiver with you in the house.  Range is 300 feet.  I'm never more than about 70 feet away from mine but it goes through walls no problem.  Uses a wireless phone frequency.  One you get one for Christmas you won't be able to smoke without it.  In fact, if you have a birthday or anniversary coming up, why wait?  Or Thanksgiving.  Hey, you want to guarantee a perfect bird, right.  Gotta have one!

Thanks! You're right- why wait?
What the big price diff between the two?

Ah- sorry. Nevermind. I didn't read your reply right. It's only a $10 difference!

No worries.  The 733 has a bigger screen, universal probes (no difference between the meat and chamber probe), and a few more features than the 732.  Both kinds have their fans.  The probes on the 732 look different, one only for the chamber and one only for food.

Once again, personally, I don't use all the extra features available even on the 732.  All I want to know is the temp of the chamber and the food.  I've used the extra features on another non-wireless thermometer I own and all it did was eat up the batteries.  With the 732 there's no confusing which is the food and which is the chamber probe.  Shop them online at A-Maze-N products or Amazon and buy the one that suits you best.  Whichever one you get, you'll love it.

I heard Todd extended the labor day sale. I don't know if it's still on but it was twenty percent off with free shipping. Continental US only.
