I've been hanging around here for a couple of years learning all I can while I scrounge up enough stainless to start a build. I've got enough stuff to start so it's time to get off my ass and get to work! The tank is about 120 gallons and was a liquid oxygen tank, scored it for $300 a couple of months back. I got a bunch of scrap plate from my Dad who can no longer weld since he got his pacemaker when he turned 86. The majority of the plates were 19 3/4 wide and about 35" long so I had to add a couple of strips to get the firebox to come out the size I needed. It will be 24w x 24h x 19 3/4d (~130%). The tank is about 30" in diameter and 42" long.
The trough to the left is 8' long and I was going cut it in half and weld it back to make a grill shaped smoker until I found this tank. The trough is only 0.090 sheet so the tank @ 3/16" is a much better option. I found a stick and a half of 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 square tubing to use for the frame and I may split it and make channels for the grate supports. I'll still have to go and buy some pieces but I have it down to a manageable beating paying retail.
You have to love a plasma cutter....
This is the strip I have to add to get up to the 24" height for the firebox.
Down to the firebox door end, I've got all the seams welded outside and most on the inside. I started working on it a few days ago but I'm trying to get it ready for my buddy to use it for an event in September to support a local orphanage. I'll need to add a strip to the top so I planned on beating some sheet stock into a curved transition from the strip (about 4" down) at the door and under the RF plate to become the baffle plate. I have a chunk of 3/8" 308 plate that is big enough for the RF plate and I plan having it removable split sections resting on a center drain angle. I still haven't decided if I want to get a Harbor Freight trailer or just set it up on casters. I have a utility trailer with a ramp and a boat winch so I may just winch it on for now and make sure I leave the option open for a trailer later. Thoughts and suggestions are very welcome!
