I am going to start building my first smoker and was curious as to what material to use. I have some pipe but I don't remember if it's steel or iron. Are there any concerns to using either type of material. Will either work. Will one cause a problem. Just want to make sure I don't have anything putting off toxic fumes or anything

Hello.  Welcome.  I see this is your first post.  Please take some time and swing over to Roll Call and introduce yourself so that we may give you a proper "Hello".  All info you can provide us with such as smoker type, location and so on will help us answer any questions you may have, and pictures help a bunch.  As for your question: As long as you give it a really good hot burn you should be fine using either as far as safety goes.  The trick comes with building the smoker.  I was a welder for a while.  When you say iron I think of cast iron.  No matter.  Be it cast iron, steel, or stainless, each has it's own characteristics.  Each also requires different techniques for cutting, welding/and or fixing together.  If you have the knowledge to work all 3 then you should be fine no matter your meaning.  Just FYI, you do know fine quality cast iron and case hardened steel will break if dropped on a hard surface?  Breaks like glass.  Good luck.  Keep Smokin!
