Upgraded my old clamshell leaky smoker for a new oklahoma joe. Heavier steel for sure, and I love the wheels. Seasoned it last night and tossed some ribs on for my first cook.

Went well, pit held temp very well, didn't need as much tending as my old one. Kids got hungry so I pulled the ribs prob about 30-45 mins early. Cooked all the way, just could have been a bit more tender. I'm gonna like this pit for sure.

It's a great feeling when you upgrade to a better pit and can immediately see the increased performance. Congrats!

Normal people who don't smoke just don't understand the pride and excitement that comes with an upgrade!

I've got a buddy who makes little jokes about me putting "after market" products (new stack and better thermometer) on my smoker and about how I treat it like its a prized possession. Kind of pisses me off at times, but then I remind myself of how he doesn't know what good food is. A good meal to him is a turkey burger. Go figure. I'll stick with my after market smoker and a good slab of ribs.

Thanks everyone. I got the ONLY highland model in stock from the walmart near lows motor speedway. I couldn't justify the $200 for the longhorn on 200 more cubic inches. I know there are many more things I can buy (diffuser) or the longhorn but I can weld so I'll enjoy making my own, along with a 2nd shelf. I enjoy sitting outside, drinking a cold one, and playing with my kids, then showing my son simple things about the pit.... And fire.

Happy Q'ing.

Good morning and welcome from East Texas, Congrats on the up-grade. Hickorybutt gave you some good advice, after you have smoked a couple of time, pay attention to your smoker and see if it needs any tweaks. And remember you can't rush great BBQ it's done when it's done .  Glad you joined up
