New Braunfels side firebox smoker $50, what's your opinion?

Is this an older heavy metal smoker or thin sheet metal? They want $50...is it worth that, If it's not rusted out? They claim its not rusted out. Looks like the fire grate is missing. Are the smoker grates the correct size or have they been replaced?

Thanks for the input.

I can't tell about the grates, however they are relatively cheap and would be good to replace.

YES, even if rusted some(but not too bad) you can protect the remaining Pit with a piece of metal curved to pit contour ( a little elbow grease).

$50. is a steal, when you get restored, take that couple a plate of goodies...

It looks as if they burned in the cooking chamber icon_eek.gif ,what a Sacrilege . Never do that, a FB is cheap, the Body a different story.

Clean it out and sand the surface of the interior and re-season as if new. Then enjoy years of great Qing.

The label looks like one of the latest models before going out of business.

Hey oldschool, thanks for the input. Yeah, you are right about cooking in the smoking chamber; a shame! I realize there will be a good amount of cleanup, but thought it would be worth it if it's heavy steel and not thin sheet metal.

Thanks!

What kind of learning curve is there in learning how to properly use a smoker like this? I have never smoked on a horizontal offset. Only a ECB years ago and a MES 40".

Thanks oldschoolbbq, you make it sound so easy, although, I know it takes a good bit of experience to make it look so easy.

Take care!

If it is not rusted through it is a good deal. That is what I have been using for the last year and a half. The only mod I have done is to make a charcoal basket.
