Buying a smoker - Opinions?

Thread Starter

So I'm posting this in builds because one of the smokers I'm looking at is a UDS build, and I figured the guys here might have more/better insights than the generic charcoal smoker forum.

I'm looking to buy a used (or reasonably priced new) smoker. I have found a couple options and thought I'd ask for feedback on which seems like the better way to go.

I think I want a horizontal smoker, mostly for the ease of use. I'm currently using a vertical one (Brinkman's Gourmet) and it's just kind of a pain to deal with a large piece of meat on a fairly small cylindrical grill. It's particularly tough to remove a 200 degree pork butt that's deep inside the barrel.

Here are two used grills I've identified. The first is a UDS build. I've asked the owner for some more pics so I can see how the barrels tie together and what the hole between the smoking chamber and the firebox looks like, but haven't gotten anything yet. Here's a link to some pics:

The second is a Brinkman Smoke N Pit. You can see by the pics that the owner hasn't done any of the mods recommended on this forum, so that'll be left to me, which is fine.

These two grills are priced similarly, so the only financial consideration is the cost of modifying each of them for performance. Obviously the UDS is a wildcard based on quality of construction and other factors, so I'm hoping someone can just give some general advice about that type of build and it's reliability, consistency, and utility.

Any thoughts on which way I should go? Or suggestions for a reasonably priced (under $200 including necessary mods) new purchase?

Thanks in advance!

A straight vertical uds will be the most efficient and you'll have plenty of room....cook on 2 levels.    I'm just starting on mine, i'll be doing this with a few mods and different paint.   IMO you can't beat 12 plus hour cooks on something w/out needing to add charcoal, plenty of room for food and can keep temp easier than a UDS unless you're talking BGE's ...but UDS have more space for food than eggs.
