Long time lurker, first time poster.  I've been smoking meats for a few years(started with a Big Chief top load, and replaced it(after the neighbor kid found out that the lid makes a perfect shield when "sword fighting" with sticks) with a UDS last spring.

While I love the UDS(best salmon and lake trout I've ever eaten) I'm now looking for something a but more weather insensitive(I live in MN, after all) and something that will bee a bit more hands off.  The UDS does its job, but seems to take a bit of babysitting, as wind, ambient temp, etc. all make each smoke session a new experience.

So I'm here researching propane and electric and trying to figure out what I want.

Thanks to all for the sheer number of great posts I've already read!

If you didn't read the "Terms of Service" notes.....please do.  There are a few things that everyone should know about those little "pesky" rules before plunging into the forums. It's just a reminder of what to do and what is sort of a no-no here.

Hello fellow Minnesotan and Welcome to SMF....I use a MES30 which is a really nice smoker. The MES40 is the larger version. I also use a lump coal smoker and usually have them all going at the same time. You can't go wrong with the Masterbuilt Electric which ever one you choose....
