Im somewhat new to smoking. Last summer I bought a brinkman smoker and I made a few things with success, including a turkey breast some chicken and a brisket. But lately I've been looking around the internet and saw some plans to make one out of a trashcan and have decided to make one. But the thing is the plans I've been able to find include an electric hot plate and I want to make one that is fuled by charcoal. My plan is to use my old webbed smoker joe as the fire basket. A few inches above that mount a water pan on top of a grate. And above that the cooking grate. And on the outside near the bottom two or 3 valves to control airflow. Im planing on building this around spring/summer time so I have plenty of time to plan it. So does anybody here with more experience than me have any pointer for such a build? Any info will be appreciated.

You might give some consideration to building a UDS instead.  Same basic concept and probably easier to build than the trash can deal.  The guys in the UDS forum have UDS builds down to a science and can offer a lot of build advise.

Yeah, I thought of building one. But decided on the trashcan design because the uds seemed too big for what I was going to use it for. Plus seemed like it would gobble up alot pf fuel.
