I have been burned by poor quality salmon buying "fresh" from Midwest grocery stores in the meat case.  Does anybody have any experience with overnight Fed-Ex deliveries from Alaska?  Any recommended suppliers? How long will it keep in the freezer? etc.

I did notice what appeared to be a decent frozen salmon fillet in the local grocery store, but it was $20.

Thanks,

Frozen, vac-packed Alaska salmon in the grocery is the same you get when ordering from the net.... Only difference, cheaper air freight when shipping 100,000 #'s to the lower 48.... or they ship it in freezer holds of ships, Million #'s at a time... When I fished for Trident, they had a factory ship that filleted, blast froze and shipped the fish within 36 hours of being caught....  Good quality fish...

Don't buy farmed raised fish from Viet Nam or Laos etc....  It is raised in the Mekong River and other rivers that are similar in being a "sewage" system....

Dave,

I think you are right.  I thought that you could get a price break ordering direct from Alaska, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  Our local grocery store had Copper River Sockeye salmon frozen fillets for $9.99 lb.  Seems like a really good price, for looks like a nice piece of Salmon.  I thought I would practice on a piece of Pink Salmon, but as it turns out, that was more per lb. than the Sockeye on sale.

So, I am officially forgetting about mail order salmon.
