Here's a pic of my new build.  Most welding done by a good friend.  Got the Brinkman charcoal grill for nothing from another friend.  The firebox is a 15 gallon drum on its side.  6 inch pipe between the two with a old timey looking cast iron damper.  Huge grate, I fit 3 ten pound pork loins on there for a small competition recently with a little room to spare.  Door to the box is nice and big so I can throw my apple and cherry wood in there in big chunks for the longer cooks.

Many thanks to all the posters on here.  I looked at probably hundreds of posts and threads on here for ideas.  Greatly appreciate all the wisdom on here.

Firebox is a little small, but I would think you could use some charcoal in the upper compartment to get the cooking started, then some wood in the firebox for smoke and to extend cook time.  Or even install a small gas burner up top .

i guess i should say we got it up to 275 or so, just to see what it could do, but it required quite a good fire going on down below and wouldn't be able to sustain that for a long cook (like a brisket or pork butt).

i did consider hooking up an electric heat source or something like that for the main chamber.  haven't ruled that out yet.  maybe gas too...

its a pretty good sized firebox, much larger than any side box i could come across.  if it was any bigger i wouldn't know where to put it!

thankfully i have a decent sized pile of apple and cherry wood to use, cause lump charcoal ain't gonna cut it with this.
