Tonight I smoked a couple of tri tips for a party. This was my second time smoking tri tips and I used the following marinade, which I can now recommend.

Red Wine Marinade
1/2 cup red wine (cabernet)
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
2 tablespoon spicy brown mustard
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

Here's photos:

Before

After

The tri tips were about 2.3 lbs each and they smoked for 2 hrs and 15 mins with cherry wood, and then I moved them into a ceramic baking dish and wrapped with heavy foil. Then transported them to the party and carved them up about an hour after they'd been off the grill. They were still warm and a nice juicy medium rare.

looks good!...how long did you marinade?
I mixed up double the amount in the recipe since I had two tips and I put each in a zip lock and let it marinate over night (a few over 24 hrs total). It was good and the cab added to the pink color the smoke gives the meat for a really tasty looking result.

Your marinade recipe looks mighty tasty. I would try it on some other cut of meat but I do not like a marinated TriTip. They have so much natural flavor

Yeah I know what you mean about the tri tip, I was thinking flank steak would be good with this.

Haha, great minds think alike. My first thought when reading your recipe was flank steak would be perfect for that and the second thing is I would add a little honey. Great recipe, thanks for sharing.

I use only a commercial coffee based rub on Tri Tips and smoke with apple wood till about 135. Let them rest and they are awesome.

Looks good. I agree with this guys. KISS with the Tri-Tip

I usually do keep it simple with the tri-tip, but I cannot ignore all the questions about what was in my marinade from people at the party! What was really nice about this recipe was the dark stain the wine leaves on the meat making it look more impressive than the tri-tips I smoke with a simple rub. I assume the marinade would do the same to another cut, say flank, but I'd consider doing this marinade with tri-tips again just for that color . . .
