So I finally got an AMNPS and first I want to remark on the awesome customer service from http://www.amazenproducts.com/

I had emailed Todd a few times with some questions and he responded very quickly with very informative answers. My order was shipped the same day and I received it 49 hours later, Minnesota to Georgia in 49 hours! I am very impressed with this company and will only buy pellets or any other product they have from them! Customer service means a lot to me and I will pay a little more just to get it but with http://www.amazenproducts.com/  you don't have to pay more!

Ok so on to the AMNPS in my RFB. I couldn't wait to try it out and I didn't have any meat to cook and not enough time either I just wanted to do some initial testing. First i loaded up 1 row of the AMNPS and lit it with my propane torch. While giving it the 10 minutes to get started I lit the GOSM (completely empty) to let it warm up. After 10 minutes I place the AMNPS inside my RFB:

and shut the lid. I have the top vent on the GOSM wide open and I have also cut another hole in the top to help create more draft through the cabinet. I let it burn for about 10 more minutes then (I couldn't wait) opened the door to see if any smoke was moving. At this point I couldn't see any coming out the top vents. But inside was a different story:

There a real nice flow of good TBS coming into the chamber. So I just let it burn. After an hour smoke was still flowing into the chamber and only a few of the pellets had burned but still no visible smoke out of the top vents although I could smell it, and man it smelled good! Here's the pellets after an hour:

I decided to set up the smoker to see if anything would change so I put the sand pan back in and then I just let it continue to burn and really no change in the next hour, smoke was flowing and the pellets were still burning:

After 3 hours still no change, everything is right on track with what I had hoped for. Still burning and flowing smoke into the chamber:

The row of pellets isn't even done after 3 hours so I can really see where a full AMNPS could easily last for 10 hours. This was just a quick initial test and there a few things I am already working on and some other things I want to try and as I work on these I will post my findings.

I think this was a great success, I got 3 hours of great TBS inside a propane smoker using an AMNPS and I think it would have kept going and going and going. This will make those all night brisket smokes a breeze.

I know this is kind of a drastic mod but anyone who wants to be able to use an AMNPS in a propane smoker during hot smokes might want to consider it. I have fought keeping good smoke going everytime I smoke and Todd's AMNPS is the answer to quit fighting and just let it smoke!

Thanks again Todd! and also NWDave, forluvofsmoke (Eric), and Pops for all of their advice and ideas to get me where I am at today. I couldn't have done it without SMF!!!

Very Cool!

Looks like it's working better than I had hoped

So far it's working great and I can only see it getting better!

A couple of things I forgot....my smoker was running a pretty consistent 230* the whole time, the sun was around the house and there was no wind so I didn't have to fight the elements, nothing like last weekend. And another thing, for this fire box to work the propane has to be going so the heat will create a draft to pull the smoke out of the box into the chamber. Once while I had the door open for a few minutes i noticed smoke leaking from the box and there was like a back flow and it was coming out of the fresh air intake:

But with the door shut there was absolutely no leakage, every bit of smoke was going into the chamber. Remember this was designed for hot smoking. I think if I want to cold smoke I can just place the AMNPS inside the chamber with no propane and it should burn fine, but that is another test, so stay tuned!

So last night I couldn't see any smoke coming out of the top vent. I remember reading that either NWDave or forluvofsmoke wrote something once that they thought the flame from the propane would burn up the smoke so you couldn't see it, the smell and flavor was still there just no visual. Well I want to see smoke! Since with my mod the intake pipe into the chamber sits right over the burner I thought this is what's happening to the smoke. Tonight I smoked a steak and thought I would add a little mod to see what happens. I took the chip pan holder and turned it upside down and wrapped some foil on it to cover the flame:

During the smoke I could see smoke coming out of the top vent but it was like one of those digital 3D pictures from the 80's, I had to stand still, stare just above the smoker and relax my eyes and it was there. A very light thin stream of almost invisible smoke. All I could think was, "This is Awesome the Perfect Smoke!"

So I'm thinking a piece of sheet metal with some little legs or something.

Will this modding thing ever end?

To your first question about ending the mods......Never, you're bitten and it's a curse sometimes.

About the smoke visibility, remember, tbs, think "thin blue smoke".  Even if you can't see it, it's still working.  You'll still get your smoke ring.  Honest.

For cold smoke, using your current setup, cover the burner plate area with foil so no air is sneaking in that way.  I just take the removable grease tray that rests in the bottom and cover it all with foil.  I shut down the side vents to about 50% and you should be good to go.  Yes, you can set the AMNPS in the bottom of the smoker but where's the fun in that?  Too simple, gotta complicate it a bit, otherwise, we'll take away your tinkerer status badge....

So far I have only done short smokes with this, 2 -3 hours, and it has worked Great. Friday night into all day Saturday I smoked a couple of pork picnics. I started at 8:00 Friday night with a full AMNPS and watched very nice TBS come out the top vent for 4 hours, and it was just starting to make it's turn into the second row. I went to sleep and Sat. morning checked and all the pellets were burned. I feel very confident that it kept smoking and I got at least 10 hours of smoke from it. I am very impressed!

Thanks again to all who helped figure this out!

Did you ever make the deflector mod out of sheet metal rather than the tin foil. I have been using my mail box smoke chamber mod coming through one of the side vents, but am looking to mount it at the back of the smoker too. I'm now using the 18" AMNTS and it performed flawlessly this last weekend with temps up to 275.  I didn't use it in the mailbox though, just on the lowest shelf. Sure made some good TBS!

No, I guess I got lazy because the foil is working just fine. Yea I wish the Tube had come out before I did this, would have saved me a lot of work but I enjoyed doing it and it works so good I can't justify buying a Tube now.

Here's the TBS I was getting on T-Day:

Thanks for the update. I think that I will be cutting the hole in the back soon and I may put it up just a bit higher. I've found that when I cold smoke using the tube If I put it down on the chip box tray, I don't get much of a temp rise. Of course its not all that warm right now either. I think it hit 36 today!

Yes it's a hole, I cut it just to help create more draft, not sure if it's really needed but I have found I can control temps with it a little by sliding that piece of metal over it and leaving the other vent wide open so i still get good airflow. The more airflow also helps when I'm drying jerky in it.

I was just curious, I'm usually trying to close things up just to hold in the heat for most of the year here in Central Oregon.

Last time I was in Georgia I was taking a boat from Mass to Florida, just after Hurricane Fran. Weather was terrible so we ended up not being able to find moorage on the ICW. We ended up In Midway at Halfmoon Bay Marina up the Timmons River I think. It was the night of Georgia Auburn Game. It was a fun evening. They were having a big party and they fresh grilled oysters and blue crabs, two wheel barrow fulls of each!!!!

I'm just up the road from Midway, I know where Half Moon is, beautiful area down there! Sounds like that was a fun night!

I'm usually fighting to keep temps down but it's cooling off here now, was only 68* today!
