Burn out ?????s for the UDS pros

Thread Starter

I picked up a drum that was used for olive oil and I want/need to do a burn out(I think?) It is already cut in half and I plan to use it for a vertical rotisserie build.

Do I just fill it with wood and let it burn for several hours?

Then just scrub it out? I won't actually cook in it but it will be used to house a vertically mounted heat source with a rotisserie in front of it. Hopefully it will have a similar effect to these vertical cookers below.

only on a smaller scale

Thanks for any input.

Since it is split it may be easier to just take a hand held propane weed burner to it.

This should do the trick Dual Turbo Propane Torch Kit — 1,125,000 BTU | Torch Kits | Northern Tool + Equipment

Yeah, being already cut in half i bet you could have it blasted for $20 or so.  I just had the inside of a drum plus both sides of the lid for $25.  Look in yellow pages for sandblasting or powder coating.

Interesting build! Please keep us posted on your progress.

Or take a grinder to it.

If you can get it Blasted for $20 do it, that stuff is kinda a pain in the patootie, otherwise grab a 6 pack and start the hottest fire you can in it, then hit it with a wire wheel, then repeat....that should do it.

I would take a Harbor frieght weed burner to it. I to have been using used food grade drums and often have to burn them out..

Teez, morning....  I would set up the burner and rotisserie assembly.... fire it up and check the temp of the 1/2 drum.... it shouldn't get warm at all... just thinking you know...  IR heat on the meat and not IR heat back on the drum.... The food grade paint would make it easy to clean if all the temp checks work out to your liking....  Dave

Let us know what you find out... a great learning experience for all....
