Hello from a big city!

Thread Starter

Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself.  I'm a gal living in San Francisco and I'm a platform partner here at SMF.  I'm still learning about smoking and what my options are for smoking in a city (I do have a backyard!) so I've been checking out some posts on that topic but will probably be asking more myself.  I've always been a huge fan of EATING smoked meats (duh!) of all kinds but have yet to take the plunge!

Hi Jenni! Welcome to the family!

A couple things come to mind regarding your area of residence, and being I know little of your local regulations, that may be something you'll want to ask about. If you have home owners association rules, city or county rules governing outdoor cooking, you'll want to check into that. If it's a condo or apartment dwelling, a whole new set of rules can come into play regarding the type of heat source you can use (most restrict use of charcoal due to increased fire hazards with multiple family codes don't allow it's use). If you're not in a sub-division with a home owners association, then, you only need to consider any restriction applicable by local laws.

Just some food for thought while you begin planning for your soon to be addiction...well, heck, you're already addicted from what I read, but smoking your own? Man, you can't beat it! Once you get started, you'll be asking yourself: what took me so long?!?!?!?!

Enjoy the forums, and don't be shy about asking questions.

Remember, the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask...th_dunno-1[1].gif

Welcome Jenny

Glad to see you getting active on the boards.  Eric brought up some great points - I have relatives up in your area and it seems like there is a rule for everything in some areas

First off welcome to SMF there Jenni. You'll really like this place for there are a bunch of really good folks here that would just love to help you with just about anything to do with smoking meat. Then if you have any questions you just post them here or yu can try in chat for a faster answer. If you are really new to all of this I would recommend that you look up and take the e-course. It is free and it will also give you the basics on smoking. So with all that said now go and get something to smoke.

Welcome To Your New Addiction

Thanks so much for the warm welcome everybody!  I am already learning so much and am currently researching the rules and regulations in my area before I make any big purchases - Eric, you're right that San Francisco has a lot of codes etc but luckily my part of town has a little more space so I think I'll be in luck.  I had the most amazing applewood smoked bacon sandwich from a BBQ place yesterday that just made me want to get started even more...
