Hi all, I am getting ready to start improving my old horizontal SFB smoker and need some help. I am going with the duct from the fire box opening to the other side of smoke chamber design so heat can radiate from the steel duct to the meat and smoke gets to the meat from the end of the duct. I need to know what gauge steel to use for the duct and how far from the end of the smoke chamber does it need to stop? Also with the design does the smoke stack still need to extend all the way to the cooking grate? I know I will need to move it to the firebox side of the smoke chamber.

Thanks,

James

I think, if I understand correct. That with the duct type that you are talking about, you would have to make it similar to this pic. So that the temps would be even across the grate.

If you take the duct across the under side of the grate and exit the opposite end of the fire, it may not draft right heading back to the stack on the firebox end.

But if its like the pic then you base your holes on the amount of heat that will exit the duct. the farther it travels thru the duct the larger the openings would have to be. Also the stack can stay where its at, and as far as the stack to the grate. I don't think it has to be all the way to the grate but I do think if its a doable mod then go for it. As it can't really hurt anything.

I'm sure there is other ways, this is just one of the ways I have seen it done.

Pls keep us updated on how it goes.

It sounds like you want to convert your SFB to a reverse flow smoker. With that, all the smoke goes to the 'far end' then comes back over the food and exits at the same end of the smoker as the firebox. If I understand the concept of a reverse flow, the heat would also follow that path, not just the smoke. I could be wrong on that, though. I would suggest checking out the posts here about reverse flow smokers and see if this is what you want. If it is, I'd be really interested in how you do it. I have an SFB that I don't really use much. I could easily be influenced into following your lead.

I will defiantly keep you informed.
