    Starting the Smoke House

Thanks for all the help! I like all the recommendations. I am hoping to get back to cutting boards this weekend. I think everything is starting to slow down now. I believe the law is the same here. I'm not really concerned about it. Its kind of back in the woods anyway.

    Starting the Smoke House

My plan is to use two layers of cinder block mortored together. Drive T-Poles down and fill the respective holes with concrete. Bolts sticking up to bolt the framing to. I dont want it going anywhere! The floor will be gravel so I am assuming this is not a full foundation? The White oak logs I...

    Starting the Smoke House

Great info! I didn't think about the wood that would be sitting against the cinder blocks. I have access to white oak, walnut, hickory, cherry........ (I save the last two for smoking) so cutting a couple pieces of white oak is not a problem. Would it cause any problems if I didnt let the wood...

    Starting the Smoke House

Just thought of another question. I was researching to make sure I understood the board and batten construction and noticed one thing. All of the examples I saw were using finished wood. I will be using rough cut lumber straight from the mill. Since it is rough cut will the boards still be able...

    Starting the Smoke House

That is good info to have. I am going to guess that the building can shift due to the lack of support provided by the siding? Do you think it will still be a problem with a structure as small as I'm building? or does size not matter?

    Starting the Smoke House

I apologize I didn't explain the state of the tree I was cutting but that is good news! I had not thought about what if I needed to change a board out.......going board and batten is looking more like the way to go even if it takes more wood. I do plan on using screws. Thanks for the help!

    Starting the Smoke House

When you say "green" do you mean that the tree was recently still living? or just that it was just recently milled? The reason I ask is this tree has been down for over two years. The root ball and everything went over. Over a year ago I cut the base of the tree from the root ball and it has...

    Starting the Smoke House

I have considered board and batten for the siding but that would almost double the amount of wood I need to cut. I am planning on using a shiplap joint (I've added a picture below) for all of the siding. My reason is this is all rough cut lumber that will not be going through a kiln. I assume...

    Starting the Smoke House

Like I said in my introduction I am going to build a smoke house and I have started getting materials together. Its going to take a little while as I am milling all the wood. Here is what I said in my introduction "I am an amateur smoker who uses a smoker grill many times a year to smoke up...
