    Adding gas assist

Maybe one of these two ideas will work for you. I did the turkey burner thing, but not the "log lighter" yet. http://http://www.hobartwelders.com/...ad.php?t=28224 Just be sure the "make up" air comes from the outside of the cooker.

That is a great retro picture. Thanks for pointing out that someone has been there and done that. Great history. If a picture is worth a thousand, that one is a million.

Serious skills there. I don't see any hammer marks. Looks like you could build an airplane if you wanted.

    Trying It Again . . .

Thanks for helping me understand what I'm looking at, that makes more sense. I've read a post of someone that put an air intake on the bottom of the firebox. Located near the front (nearest the end that your existing air intake is on). All of his fuel (wood/charcoal) sits on a "shelf" keeping it...

    Trying It Again . . .

In your picture, the smoke looks like it is blowing left to right. What good is the wind break where you have it? What are you breaking from the wind ? Really curious. http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/for...ad.php?t=16269 I'm not trying to "whip a dead horse", but hasn't wind direction been...

Why Not A Convection Smoker ???

A true convection fan has "blades" that are very flat with just a small "kicker" on the edge. It should not push or pull much air at all. The blades just stir up the heat waves as they rise, allowing the heat to do more work before it escapes. I'm not saying that the convection fan will or...

    Another Frustrating Smoke . . .

What direction was the wind in relation to the firbox inlet? Was the wind blowing across it, into it or away from it?

    Which Lump Do You Use?

Here in South Texas we have at least 2 brands of Mexican, 100% Mesquite Lump. It does raise cain until it gets lit, since it is hot and cheap, i ignore that problem. I pay $13.00 with tax for a 30# bag, If i drive to Laredo or McAllen, i would pay only $8.00 for 30#.

As the wind increases, the more difficult it is to make the temp. stay put. A stoker or guru would be very nice at those times. This baby eats between 4 and 6 pounds of lump per hour.

Not much is needed to keep the lump in the chute, out of the oven. The "where do you add wood" question is a 3 page debate elswhere, but suffice it to say, scattered in the lump chute or in the ash pan as desired, will work, just personal preference. Just keep in mind, that my oven is oversize...

    Exhaust pipe location

Yes, i did see it, and the additional information you provided is helpful. A 6" exhaust with damper should suit your needs. Why not build the fire in the coal box and leave the coals there(stickburner)?
  19. jet_deck

    Exhaust pipe location

My personal experience is that i have always located them at the top. Some say it should be at grate level. The stickburner has such a hi volume of air moving all the time when compared to a smoker. You definetly don't want it at the bottom, air won't flow properly and then you will have the...

    New Stumps Clone

Lump charcoal is in the chute. You light it at the bottom at the grate, the heat travels up to the oven throught the oven inlet. Coal cannot burn up the chute because the top lid is airtight. Gravity feeds new lump to the fire and the ash falls through the grate to the ash pan. Heat is...
