Several years back a member on this forum "setitandforgetitsmoker" converted his propane smoker to a temperature controlled unit with a PID, propane gas range valve, and pilot light. I think he posted some pictures of his mods.
I ordered two damper plates for my GOSM through the parts page on the Web. I was charged for two and the packing list said two, but there was only one in the box. So I try to call them, guess what?? The customer service line was discontinued due to the bankruptcy. Be wary of ordering any...
If they would have smoked some meat outside in one of the smokers and gave out samples at lunchtime on Saturday, the things would have flown off the shelves. Too bad.
We have a couple of them and think they are great. I think they have a good reputation as well. On the consumer reports site, the Cutco knife was a Quick Pick recommendation for a low maintenance knife defined by them to mean blades that don't need regular honing or sharpening. No, it isn't a...
Well, I poked around a little and found the Sears smoker on the Brinkman site. The manual is here: Kenmore Smoker Manual Definitely made by the same Chinese folks who made my Wally World GOSM.
I was interested in maybe mod'ing my GOSM with the Kenmore model's smoke stack, but it appears it...
I like this idea. I know all the various temperature control threads and my shelf mod (OK, I didn't post it in this thread, oops) are not apparent anymore. It appears at least the GOSM could support its own folder of mods.
This may have been the case in 2005, but I haven't seen any verification of the facts that one is a different gauge steel than the other. All the original post was based on was the shipping weight difference which was due to the different size. I have been wrong in the past though....(once)
Here is a step-by-step method for mounting fold-down shelves on your GOSM.
I always found it to be a pain not having shelfs on my smoker for temp probe transmitters, wood chips, water jug, sauces, and stuff. I used to have a cheapo shelf that folded down on an old grill that gave me the idea...
I noticed the web checkout page where you enter your Credit Card info. is not secure (https). That threw the flag up for me. You might want to use the phone instead.
Well, I tried again on the Web and manually entered the https instead of http.
My Maverick worked about three sessions then went belly up. It reads incorrectly on the smoker temp side now. It has to be the worst design I have seen. The switch on the inside, and such wimpy little switches, c'mon, you have to be kidding. And the battery cover button stops are ineffective...
Geek, thanks for the link. It looks promising, though I thought the cheapo servos were under $20. I was talking to some engineering buddies of mine and one of them was saying ball valves do not have much flow control, at least not proportional or linear. Perhaps a needle valve would be better...
setitandforgetitsmoker, thanks for the reply. My challenge is to keep the temperature down, so my setting is usually as low as it gets. As the meat cooks, the chamber gets warmer and I have to open the top vent and eventually don't have any control to keep the temperature down.
I have just...
Trent here in NC. I have been smoking on the Walmart special: 3405BGW
I have been smoking on it for about 1 1/2 years and cook whole pigs on rental cookers from time to time. I smoke mostly briskets and butts. I would like to find a tri-tip around here, but the meat counters say "huh, what's...
I was thinking (oh no) about automatic temp control for my GOSM. I have seen the gas valve approach which is essentially controlling the temperature by turning the flame on and off (similar to stomp the gas and stomp the brake with no in between). I am not knocking this approach as I haven't...
