Could be condensation on the top of the drum dripping back down on the food. With a bit of smoke and a bit of soot it can look like drops of black ink on the food. This can especially happen if the vent was at the very top of the drum head and the moist cooking air hits the cooler surface...
This is another gem I drudged out of the photo album. Started off with two cryo packed butts from Sams. I loaded them up with rub. I use a variant of Jeff's rub with some local honey to make it stick. The wife and kids really like the subtle difference the honey makes.
