Went to Wally World today to buy a butt for smokin (my first time eh). they had some nice lookin Tyson butts, bone in and of course with a minimum of 8% solution. Solution of what? So I went to my friendly neighborhood butcher and paid considerably more for a fresh one with no bone and no solution. This guy always charges me way too much for meat but it is always fresh and good quality.

My question is should I have bought the Tyson bone in or did I make the right choice? Who wants a boney butt anyway?

i buy the tyson butts & shoulders all the time- i just rinse them well before rubbing. they seem to work fine. plus, the nearest butcher is an hour away & the only 1 in 4 counties & he knows it. talk about overpriced crappy meats...

I'm pretty much a rookie at this, but so far I have only smoked bone-in butts. (I like the idea of cheaper meat.) I have been satisfied with the results, but like I said, I'm pretty new to this. If you are planning on pulled pork, it really doesn't matter if there is a bone or not.

Yeah I thought the bone didnt matter much and sure I paid more $/lb but I got all meat and no bone. Hey , tomorrow Ill know for sure.

This is just my opinion, but I MUCH prefer a chunk of meat, bone in. The bone(marrow) gives a flavor like no other. In all honesty, I would rather have the "T bone" than the steak.

Wish I could find butts that cheap. Man I wish I could find them at all. I look in the market every time I'm there and I have seen 2 in the past 4 months. $1.49 a lb. Not too bad if they actually had one when I want one. I think they wait until I make a trip to the butcher and THEN they put them out. Fortunately the butcher had great quality but I'm paying $2.39/lb and that's bone in.
