  1. Hello All,

Name is Stephen. I am new to the world of smoking (cooking, not eating). Smoking meat is something that I have been wanting to get into for a while now, just didn't have a smoker. I am 28, Married to a meatoholic like myself.

I will be reading the forums, to find some tips and tech.

Quick questions: What meat do you recommend for a newbie to start out with?

I hope to learn alot from all the exp on this board.

    Steve

If you are looking for something easy to smoke and you can be really creative make a fatty or ABT's (Atomic buffalo turds) Both are easy to make and are very forgiving on your smoker.

    Hi Steve and welcome
I agree that a fatty or some ABT's are pretty easy but so are chicken thighs and they are really good

Great to have you along. Another relatively easy meat is pulled pork. Usually done with a butt, but you can get country style ribs, or cushion meat, either of which are generally cut from the same area. Smaller pieces to begin with and readily available. Lots of tips on the pork forum about this too.

Welcome to the SMF Steve. A pork butt is fairly simple, as long as you relize that it may take longer than expected. It's all good my friend..

Welcome to the forum. You've already got the suggestions for a first smoke. Second one is to take pictures to post here![IMG]

  10. Thank you all for the warm welcomes. I have a brinkmann stand up charcoal smoker. I don't know too much about it besides what I read in the manual. Any comments about it? Tips? I never really researched smokers because my wife told me no [IMG] to getting one, but she didn't tell her mom no [IMG]. I guess I have a pretty good mother in-law.

Sad thing. When I went to put it together I noticed that the main section was bent into an oval. [IMG]

Returned it, and it will be 2 WEEKS before another one is available.

Thank you for the suggestion of pulled pork. That happens to be one of my favorites. Another thing that I am really looking forward to is smoking some venison bologna. I just need to become a little more familiar with the smoking process before trying it. Any tips on smoking deer bologna would be a great help.

Sorry I know this is alot of asking of questions. Here is the last one for this post promise. I have a goose/duck hunt coming up in a couple of weeks. Is it possible to smoke ducks and geese? Tips? Suggestions? Ok so that was 3 questions.

Again thank you all, this seems like a great site with tons of information.
