LEM 5lb stuffer question

    Hey guys. I'm unboxing my LEM as we speak. Two quick questions.

    1) Is the piston or gasket (part 1A & 1B) removable for cleaning? If not, how do you clean them?

    2) The air release valve (part 9A) is making it nearly impossible to remove the cylinder (part 2). Do I need to tighten the acorn nut (part 9B) to lift up the release valve? If so, how much gap should I leave between the piston and the valve?

    Ok so #2 is doh! You just twist the cylinder when trying to remove it. Pops right out.

    So what about #1? Also, the internal cylinder is covered in grease, and so is the piston. Do I need to clean this?

    Your gasket is just an O ring, you just need to get something under it to pry it out of its seat then remove it. Don't use anything sharp that could cut it.
    And yes you'll want to wash everything before you use it.
    The air valve is simple, when you set it up just put the nut on with a few turns. doesn't matter. the valve will hang down letting air out until it gets to the meat then it will be pushed up/shut to seal.

    Ah that makes sense Re: the valve.  Doh.  What happens to other stuffers that have the air bubble between the meat and the piston?  What does that mean?

    Ok I better wash everything.  It seemed pretty dirty and the whole thing was covered in grease.  Is this food grade grease?

    Re: the piston - if you look at 0:17, you'll clearly see the white piston with the red rubber seal.  Is this part removable?  I dont 100% understand what you mean.  That white part is covered in grease on mine.  I thought it would be removable so you could wash it?

    Well on any stuffer I've seen that gasket is an rubber O ring. I've never seen a lem so it might be something else. but still should be removable.
    the piston should unscrew from the shaft if its like mine. the shaft has male threads on the end piston has female.

    As stated before, the red O-ring is removable.  I remove it by taking the handle of a T-spoon and go under the ring with it and it comes off easy.  Do not use a sharp object as said before.  I wash the piston and the O-ring on the top rack of the dishwasher [pre-washing them in soapy water first] and the stuffer in the bottom rack.  I don't know why there is grease all over the piston.  I have a different brand and mine did not have that.  I spray the inside of the stuffer, inside of the tube, the piston with the ring on, with Pam before each use.  Lubricates and make's for a easier clean up after stuffing.  Reinhard

    I havent really tried to turn the piston counter clockwise yet.  I tried last night a bit and it felt like it was fixed in place.  There is no nut on the bottom side of the piston.  The plastic covers the black metal shaft going into the piston.  Any of the LEM guys know?

    The piston is removable. The o ring is removable. The trick to getting the canister past the air release is to slightly tip the canister and to make sure that the air release is is facing the front.

    Yeah I figured out the canister removal.  Tipping it did not work.  It wouldnt clear it no matter what I tried.  But if you twist the canister in place and then tip it, it clears the valve.  Took me a while to figure out hahaha.

    As for the o ring and the piston.  I dont have it in front of me right now and I briefly looked at it last night, but how do you go about removing the white piston?

    The plunger just unscrews. It may seem tight but it will give. To get the o-ring off you need to slip something between the plunger and the o ring. I use a chop stick.

    Got it thanks!  Makes sense.  Do you need to remove the o ring to clean it or can you just wash the plunger as is?

    You need to remove it. Blood and junk gets back in behind it.

    Also prior to stuffing it helps to spray the o ring with a food safe silicone or PAM.

    Just remember if you have any problems at all with your LEM stuffer, just add water. That will fix everything! Or so LEM customer service says...

    When you spray your O ring spray the gears too. If only use food grade silicone on the gears though. PAM will funk up and get nasty. The silicone will not.
