several 55 gallon steel barrels with lids that are secured with a metal retainer. Most of these are in excellent shape with fresh appearing paint (inside and out). All are clean and dry. They were used to ship a fruit concentrate that was inside a plastic bag so no liquid came in contact with the inside of the barrel. All of them are either orange or blue. They would be great for burn barrels, dry storage, storing feed, or for deer feeders. $12 each. Discounts on 5 or more barrels. For more information, please call 404-680-4238. Thanks

Wood these make a good smoker with this type of lid? I guess the lid wood have to be torched. Actually both lids. Wood the outside paint burn off while smoking? If not I wood remove the inside paint with a wire wheel. 12 bucks seems like a great price.

It may or may not be difficult to remove the coating (which is probably not just paint, but actually a composite coating) from the inside of the drum. Some have had major trouble getting it off even with burning and grinding, but otherwise the drums sound like a perfect candidate for a UDS. For $12, I'd say give it a try and if it seems like it's going to be too much work, you could always go a different route without having wasted too many greenbacks!

Looking forward to pics of your build.

If I'm reading the ad correctly that type lid is great it has a bolt that holds the "metal retainer" once you take it out the "retainer should come off then the lid should come right off. The paint I'm sure is not high heat paint and would burn off while smoking. I would check the inside for a liner but even if it has one they can be burned out then wire brushed to clean them out. I would get one and so a couple burns in it then take the wire brush to the inside if needed then the outside.

Hey Pinewoods, thanks for clarifying that for me. At the time of posting I was preoccupied and wasn't thinking much about barrels. (a young gal of 54 had my attention). For 12 bucks I may as well build one butt I'm running out of space with so many smokers and grills. Oh well, what the hell.

these are the same barrels i have right now and am currently building a UDS out of one myself. i drilled my holes on the bottom for my air intakes first then i done the burn out. i used pallet wood for the burn out and i had a blower blowing in the intake holes while burning it out. lemmee tell ya, that was a hot fire! you gotta watch it tho because the steel turns red if ya keep the blower in one spot too long. after this kinda burn the coating comes off a little easier it seems.

hey BayouChilehead, i find those at the local winery. they come exactly like the craigslist post at the begining of this thread says. they will usually give them away if you catch them at the right time.
and by the way welcome to the forums! i see that was your first post, when you can make your way over there to the ROLL CALL forum and intro yourself so we can get to know a little about ya. this is the best place to be for smokeaholics! everyone is super friendly and always willing to help! once again welcome aboard!!!

I called all the wineries in my area and none of them receive extra juice in barrels anymore, just tanker trucks. I will have to hit the pavement again and keep an eye out while I drive around. Thanks for the info Duck Killer!!

Barrels are usually easier to find than to spell! We had a milk bottling plant close by that had orange juice shipped in 30 and 55 gallon barrels. Also products like Coke syrup etc.. Actually Coke A Cola usually uses SS ones butt they are expensive. Do a (want to buy) on CL and see what happens.
