I went to the depot sat. night and I seen large bags of chunks. (hickory and mosquite) Look to be around 10#. Is this something they started carrying OR has it always been stocked with the summer seasons? Ive never seen bags that large at the depot. Anyone used any? IM going to buy one this wkend for the heavy smokin that will be taking place.

Our Home Depot always has hickory chunks and hickory and mesquite chips. That's the assortment most stores here in E. Tenn carry. I have to order any kind of fruit wood since none of the stores (at least the ones I know about) around here sell anything except hickory and mesquite.

The Lowes/HD near me mostly carries chips. But fruitwood chips are available at both - but aren't very good quality.

LOTS of dirt/ash and a good portion of teeny tiny chips. I have since moved onto chunks.

I can get Chigger Creek woods' (excellent quality) locally for $2.10/lb (Apple, Alder, Cherry, Pecan, and all the hardwoods)

I was in a hurry so I did not get a price. I shall return and snatch up a bag of each!!

Since reading this from Naked Whiz, I have looked a little harder at the quality of the wood I am buying. I'm not one for spending the kind of prices for some of the wood he tested ($3+/lb). If I can find quality wood at $2/lb and under, I try and get some.

Since learning of the "spalting" I immediately went to check my bag of Hickory, only to notice quite a few pieces in about a 10lb bag had it.

Here's the link -

See if you can peek inside the bag and visually see some of the pieces. If I can't see it, I don't buy it - no questions.

Thanks for the education. I try to sort through some of the chips that I burn as well,

I will have to go look at the brand of chunks that I bought last.

This is something for everyone to read. Maybe on the new forum, we could put it in the food safety section.

No problem. :)

I am not sure the chips suffer from this problem, since they are just tiny pieces of wood. Although if the wood had this prior to cutting/splitting/chunking then I would assume the chips would have it too.

The problem with buying chips, is at least around here, you get a good portion of ash/dirt/sawdust etc. Not exactly ideal. Furthermore, I found using chunks (depending on size) I may only need one or two chunks per hour, whereas I found chips to burn up a little quicker. Totally up to you.

I can post a few pictures of the Chigger Creek wood, although its pretty much the same as the pictures on Nakedwhiz. It really is worth the price, IMO for "nicer" woods..
