I think the regulator in my gosm is going bad and have been wanting to get a Bayou replacement with the needle valve anyway. But now that I am reading old posts on the Bayou kits I am seeing folks using 2 different ones. I'm unsure which to use.

I picked this up from Lowes yesterday - and it says high pressure but has the needle valve. I haven't installed it yet as I don't have the fitting to connect it to my valve.

But other posts talk about this one - where the needle valve is on the regulator itself. Frankly I don't know the difference or if there is a difference. If it matters I'm using a standard 20 lb. propane tank.

I'm thinking the top one (the one I now have at home) is going to be fine as it says 10 PSI, right? It's confusing as the package says NOT for BBQ grill.

It is correct on not for bbq grill those are low pressure regulators which is 11in w.c. And is regulated down by you knobs. Just for reference it takes like 27 in w.c. To equal 1 psi that is why it isn’t rated for bbq grills the one one top will work. The 30 psi will burn hotter when turned up if it doesn’t blow your flame out from too much pressure clear as mud?

Yep, still a bit muddy. Sounds like it is not the right one, but then you said the one on top will work :(

I also see another one - doesn't have the needle valve but looks like it is adjustable (which I think was the point of the needle valve). This one says 0-5 psi adjustable (model M5HPR).

Also, the M5HPR-1 (top one I posted) comes with a brass orifice and I am not sure if I need to be using that. I ask as my Landmann GOSM knob/manifold already has an orifice on the outlet end. Should I have both the orifice that comes with the new regulator assembly as well as the manifold orifice installed?

Don’t you have a knob or adjustment on the smoker itself? I would use the top one if so and use the needle valve for lower temps. You only need one orffice use the one that came with your smoker it is matched to the btu of your smoker. If your uncomfortable or unsure of your setup reach out to the manufacturer or go Oem for parts. Personally I would use the top one as long as the fittings are secure and leak free if all else fails let the wife light it jk

Yes, my gosm has the standard factory adjustment knob on it but itisn't very precise, hence my interest in this repalcement regulator setup with the needle valve.

I took a close look at my manifold today. It says 1/2 PSI, so I am worried this Bayou Classic unit at 10 PSI is going to provide too much pressure. The needle valve will help but I suspect the needle valve will not have a broad range of adjustment given that much pressure. Instead I will probably have to have it only at the lowest setting and not have much range to help me with temperature control.

It makes me think I might be better off putting a needle valve inline with a standard BBQ grill replacement regulator/hose assembly - perhaps just using some barbed connectors and hose clamps?

I put the Bayou M5HPR-1 on my gosm 3405GLA and fired it up. Yes, this higher pressure regulator can put out the heat when you crank it up like you would want on a turkey fryer or largee smoker. I have the needle valve set very low and it is quite touchy and not giving me the precise control and improved blue flame I was expecting.

A very slight touch to the needle valve handle will cause a jump (or drop) in the flame depending on the way you move it, and it then moves just a hair again and the flame adjusts a little when you let it go. So hard to tell where it will end up, needs a touch back and forth to get it where I want. The valve doesn't seem to have much friction as if the screw in the handle needs to be tightened up but they have some special torx screw in it that needs a little dot in the middle. I am not sure if it is even loose so don't want to go buy one of those special bits.

Kinda frustrating. I'm wondering if I should build up a new regulator/hose from a low pressure regulator to see if putting a needle valve in line will help and give me more range of control.

Also still getting more yellow tips than i think I should have but have adjusted the intake vent to the best setting and also put a whole new burner unit in this weekend. Seems to produce the same yellow-tipped flame (around 20 - 30%) regardless of the burner unit and also regardless of the regulator/hose used.

Have you checked the office and inside the burner where the office goes in spiders like to put a little web in there to make our life difficult which would cause issues like you speak of.

Yes. Checked several times. I just replaced the burner unit with a brand new one from Landmann and it was clean when installed.

It sounds to me like you need a regular gas grill regulator not a high pressure with a needle valve for fryers, steamers (high BTU) and the like.Unless you want your smoker to act as an incinerator ? In essence what you've done is put a 4 barrel on a Briggs & Stratton motor-not gonna work.Your OEM regulator should be marked.Replace with same psi/flow rate.

Did this work for you? I purchased the same one. Just waiting on another part to arrive to see if it works. I connected it to my smoke mountain and it started to leak out of the manifold (the part that bends and goes into the burner assembly). Not sure if this is going to work or not. I did not use the orifice that came with this as there is already one on the manifold (at least that is what I was told).
