I am in the market for a good temp probe. Like to have a double probe that I don't have to worry about the cords getting burnt. So I want to know which one you all would suggest. Which ones you have tried and liked or didn't like for what ever reasons.

I have found this one and seems like a pretty good one. Please let me know what you think, thanks.

I have that model and have had some trouble with the remote losing contact with the base. It is not hard to reprogram but it is annoying. I called Maverick and they sugested changing the batteries admiting that the batteries that come with it are el cheapos and not very good quality. Have not done that as yet just talked with them on Tuesday.

The Maverick is a good unit. I have the ET73 and have had decent luck with it. I think you would like it, plus imo their customer service has been outstanding.

the model you are looking at is the et-7,great for two pieces of meat or dual locations in a large piece... but canot monitor your high low temps like the et-73 can. the et-73 has one probe which you can set a target temp to just like the et-7 and the alarm will go off. the difference is the second probe has not only the high temp setting but also a low temp setting.this is mostly used for monitoring smoker box temps and you can set low at say 215 deg and high at 250 and it will let you know when you need to tend fire, or if you use gas like i do in my gosm, and i use up alot of 20 lb tanks which are not fulll-left over from ice fishing... will let you know if you run out of gas. the second probe on the et-73 can also be used like the second probe on the et-7, so you actually get a little more thermo with the et-73, essentially the same except the 73 has the hi-low setting on one probe. i have an et-73 and if i were to buy another i would get the same one just because of that option.

I too have the ET73 and am very happy with it. I am considering the one you are looking at as an additonal unit for when I do multiple items at one time.

If you want the best, I think the BBQ Guru Pro Com 4 and stoker system from Rock's BBQ are the absolute best.

The BBQ Guru contains a lot of pit control functions as well as wireless monitoring that is bullet proof and will transmit more than 600 Ft. It is really pricey, however.

The Stoker system also contains temp probes that are really good. It will transmit to web pages and also your cell phone through a wireless network. I want one of these for Xmas (along with a cabelas grinder!).

If you don't need wireless, I would check out the thermoworks handheld units with replaceable type K probes. I have a thermoworks thermapen, and I will tell you it is well made, accurate, durable, and made for professionals. I would assume that the rest of their product lines are the same. Check out the MTC Mini for example. http://www.thermoworks.com/

As a tip, if you need more than one probe, you can acomplish this by buying more than one probe and then plugging the one you want to monitor into the display unit of a single display (switch it at the display and turn a single channel device into a double).

Otherwise, a ET-73 will work in a pinch.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the information and help in deciding what to get. I started to say that I wasn't really concerned too much on price but just wanted a good quality unit. But BBQEng kind of changed that thought. Dang what a nice unit that is though. (BTW BBQEng. I have showed off your smoker you built to about 5 or 6 people now, loved your post on that and what a great smoker you built.)

Ok so let me see if I got this

Et-7 has two probes but both probes are for lower temps. A little cheaper.

ET-73 has tow probes one for meat and one for smoker temp control. A little more money.

I have a Traeger so the temps are pretty stable with me. (feels like cheating some though) so I would probably be better with the ET-7 for my needs. I don't have to adjust my smoker temp so two probes for meat would be more logical I think.

I have the E-7 for my MES and like it. You can also use one probe for meat and the other for the grate.

I hear the praises and the troubles with the Maverick-73 but most everyone here says their the best. I have a cheapo one from wally world it was 17.00 and I have checked it out with the ice water and the boiling water and it checked out fine so I keep on using them. Till I need another one I will stick with the 3 I now have.

Very important point.

They are different tools for different jobs. The Thermapen and other instant reads cannot be stuck in a piece of meat and left in a smoker. Well, technically they can -- they just won't work anymore after that.

The Maverick and other remote probe thermos are not instant read thermometers. Although they could be used for meat temp after you pull the meat off, their probes are so big they are better to stick in the meat after it has been cooking for a couple hours and monitor the temp. If you took a piece of meat off the smoker and then stuck one of these railroad-spike sized probes in to get the temp, you'll likely lose much of your flavorful juice.
