Yesterday I took the burner assembly out of my smoker to replace a corroded venturi. It developed such a big whole that it was igniting and burning really close to the valve.
Well once I got it apart I noticed that the screws holding the venturi to the burner were too rusted to attempt removal so I patched the whole by wrapping it with heavy duty aluminum foil and cut some wholes in it to let it breath.
After reassembly and a good cleaning, I attached a full lp tank, then fired it up to test it fully expecting to have to makes adjustments to the breather but what I found was a beautiful blue flame that looked as good as the day I brought it home. I put some wood chunks in the box and filled the bowl with h2o and let her go for a while. She smoked nicely for a couple of hours but when I went out to check, it the flame was out. The burner knob still in the on "MED" position and could not here a "hiss". I turned the knob to off then on to fire it up. Again it ran great for a couple of hours then out again.
My gut tells me it has to do with the oxygen/gas mix, or the regulator but I can't figure out why it burns nicely then petters out.
    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Brian

Just a guess, but it could be more sensitive to wind now, and that's what blows it out.

Could also be a faulty OPD in the tank itself...
Occasionally they can go bad and cut off the gas supply.
If you don't hear any gas flowing, then turning it off, then back on starts the gas flowing, that could be it.

Sounds exactly like the problem I'm having... I'll try a different tank.

    Thanks
