It's wild that I'm just now finding this thread. My wife recently traded her brother out of this thing and brought it home. Holy cow is it heavy! It's never been used but after reading these post I'm fired up! Fixing to order a meat grinder attachment and make my first batch of Tallow!

I bought a refurbished one at least 25-30 years ago, still going strong. Bought a new one last year and it sounded broken right out of the box; grinding, clunking, like gears were skipping...got worse the longer it ran (which only minutes). Returned it immediately and kept the old one. Sadly I have little faith in new appliances.
Apparently the quality of some of the new ones is closely related to the store that sold it, or so I've heard. If purchased from Wal-Mart, it might have plastic gears whereas a model purchased from Sur la Table would have all metal. If true, it's horrifically damaging to the brand.

I bought it directly from Kitchenaid...

I had an Artisan.

I killed it grinding meat. It's all good if you grind a bit here and there, I was really putting mine though grinder hell. I shouldn't have tossed it and instead repaired it, but when I sourced the parts I think I needed, it was pretty dear.

It made an awful lot of bread without ever bogging down. Semi frozen meat that was a bit too frozen - that was the death dealer. I always figured that if I want to make bread again (and that bug hasn't bitten me yet) that I could live with something 1/3 the cost of a nice KA
The lady decided I needed one for Christmas. She bought a 5.5 qt direct from KA. Lift bowl. I think I preferred my tilt Artisan but there ain't nothing about the lift I'd really complain about. Took me about 30 seconds to figure out that you just detach the attachment after you drop the bowl. I'd forgotten how much better bread tastes if you don't buy frozen dough.

Frozen dough makes great rolls. Fresh from the mixer makes damn great rolls (and everything else)

I don't think it's quite as heavy as the Artisan. It might be, but I swear I remember the Artisan being more of a chore to move.

I got my Son one for Christmas . He loves it . The Kitchen aid stuff is quality , so I spend the money for it .
He bought the pasta press for it . Verdict is still out on that .

My Son and Daughter both have the 5.5 lift bowl . Give it some time , and I bet you really like it .
I have a tilt head , and that lift bowl is solid , smooth and powerful . Has the extra 1/2 speed on it too .

I bought my wife a flamingo pink tilt head a couple of years ago, I am forbidden to use it. I have to use the white one I salvaged from a previous marriage. They are phenomenal machines.

Is the pasta extruder better than the roller cutter set up?

I bought a used K5-A on marketplace a while ago for maybe a $100 with some attachments. I believe it is a 1960's age, made by Hobart in OH. Don't use it as much as I should due the fact it is kept on a shelf in the basement.

I'm gonna say no . He paid good money for that extruder , and he's not happy with it so far . It works , but the mix has to be just right .

That's a nice mixer you have . I use mine for the sourdough .
