i sketched this today to get a better idea of what i want to build. basically, it's a giant ecb with a bunch of mods. my idea is to fab a stand on castors that's large enough to accomodate a propane tank while simultaneously raising the smoker for ease of use. side doors are separate, one is only for changing smoke cans. i've also got the chimney exiting through the side of the drum so lid removal is a snap. does anyone see any flaws in this design? all comments are welcome.
thanks,
guvna

Hi Guvna, are you going to fab the cooking chamber or only the stand? If you're going to fab it, what do you plan to use? Also, what is a smoke can???

Just curious - looks like an interesting project.

Interesting plans. I don't know anything at all about propane, but I am looking at them because I don't have a propane cooker. All I have is charcoal/wood and electric. My simple idea for a base was to take an old push mower base and mount my build right on it. I did this with my first cabinet smoker. The adjustable wheels make it real easy to level it out during a cook.

Wouldn't it be easier to just build a drum?

Well, since all comments are welcome, I will say chit can the propane.

Needed to get that off my chest.

Now to somewhat legit questions that popped into my mind.

Why do you need to be able to remove the lid if you got the big door on the front? Seems like the lid would just give more opportunities for smoke and heat to escape.

Any kind of baffle or anything between the heat and the meat besides your "chip can" to deflect/redirect the heat?

Along those same lines, if you are going to have the exhaust on the side, why not move the burner to the opposite side. Seems like the left side of the smoker is going to stay cool in relation to the right......that is where the thought/question about the baffle came in.

Just my 2 cents and probably not even worth that.

Good luck with the project!

nice drawing

But That looks onlike one drum. I thought you are going to build smoke freaks triple thunder!!!

bubba,
this is a drum. it will just be sitting on a stand i will make.

fatback,
i want to be able to take the lid off for ease of cleaning as well as getting big pieces of meat in and out. what looks like the chip pan is actually a water pan. with propane you run smoke cans right on the burner. i could put another exhaust on the other side, i guess. do you think it'll really matters that much? if the temp. difference if only a few degrees, i'm not that concerned about that.

tom,
i am fab-ing a cooking chamber out of a drum (UDS). the stand i will probably free hand with my welder. a smoke can is simply an empty coffee can with wood chunks inside.

david,
your idea for the lawnmower is an interesting one... thanks!

chef,
you're just thrilled to death by the big triple...

thanks for your comments, if anyone else wants to chime in please do so. i'm planning on keeping this smoker so let's "measure twice, cut once"

I don't know how much temp diff you would get, just throwing out what ran through my mind. How big will the smoker be? I would think the larger the smoker the larger the difference.

that's a great question div. on the ecb i use the bottom rack to hold a drip pan. in lieu of your comment i will make a separate rack specifically for a drip pan. thank you for you observation... good call!

how are you gonna cut the door and get it sealed properly so heat will not escape?

i had a charcoal smoker my man! but for now, propane is getting the job done... and it's soooooo easy too... gassers unite!!!

hahahaha! that's good...

travcoman,
i thought about that and i figured that the tank for my gas grill sits right underneath it. so it can't be that unsafe, right? anyway, your comment is dually noted.
