Here I am, in the outskirts of NYC (Brooklyn) with absolutely no knowledge of smoking except what I see on the Food Network competitions (e.g. meat, charcoal and wood chips in big a** contraptions).

I love to eat BBQ and I've had good success with my pulled pork using the oven and a dutch oven pot.  So I figured buy a smoker?  Why not?

I must admit, that it's pretty intimidating to even figure out how smoking actually works.  And other than a smoker, the other items I would need (e.g. coal, water pans, chips, accessories).  But I look to gain much knowledge on these forums.

I don't have a smoker yet but was thinking about something relatively inexpensive and small, probably the Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker 22.5

Thanks in advance for all the knowledge!

Welcome Ming-Tzu!  Lots of folks here with lots of great ideas.  The WSM you mentioned is a great smoker, especially if you want to do some quantity.  Comes in 3 different sizes.  Simple to use and turns out great smoked meat no matter what you put in it!  Ask whatever questions you have and folks will pitch in their ideas and suggestions.  Smoking is a blast and oh so addictive.  I had to interrupt this post to go pull two pork tenderloins off one of my smokers.

Welcome, see ya around the forum ! Good luck on your smokin search and let us know what ya decide on.... There's a lot of good choices !

Hello and welcome from East Texas. This is a great site, lots of information and great people that are willing to throw in their two cents worth on about anything.   Don't let it intimidate you, keep it simple and don't over think it, I started with an ECB "el-cheap-o - Brinkman that turned out lots of great pork butts, briskets, ribs, chickens and anything else I could get on there. Good Luck

Ming-Tzu-Welcome to SMF. If you're hand with tools and space is at a premium-Check out the Mini WSM build forum here: http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/f/3163/mini-wsm

They are fairly inexpensive to build, don't take up a lot of space and makes just as awesone bbq as its larger brothers (18.5 & 22.5 WSM) but doesn't make as much. My Mini is just the right size for Ma Dutch and me.

Enjoy the Smoke!
