Too cold in Ohio..

  1. I just can't seem to get my wood smoker above 100 degress with out burning an excessive amount of coal. My ecb won't get above 180, but it is making smoke. I've got two spares cut St. Louis style on now. If I don't see the "pull" I'm looking for in three hours at least I should have enough smoke in the meat to finnish in the oven. I'll keep you posted. Wish me luck.

Wrap that smoker in canvas/natural fiber carpet... something. You are using a wind break too right? The wrap will up ya 50° easy.
  3. No wind to speak of today but I do have the ecb cornered and blocked between the house and the wood pile, I'll hit the garage and try to find something to wrap. My garage is filled to the door with crap I keep bringing home for one use or another, I'm sure there's something out there I can use that won't burn.

  5. It looks like the best thing I can find is an old moving blanket I got off a uhaul once. Think that will work?

I've given up trying to smoke in the cold. We have been dealing with 40 to 50 below wind chills here for more than a month now. I tried it on Super Bowl Sunday. It was actually in the teens above zero. I had a nice windbreak between the garage and the 3 season house where the smoker sits. It took an insane amount of lump and wood to try to maintain temp not to mention CONSTANT babysitting. Add fuel and the temp ran way up and then dropped off quickly cause the cold pulled it away from the smoker. Add more fuel and the same thing. Either hot or cold. Would never really settle down. No I didn't have a blanket or piece of carpet to use to throw over the smoker. Besides won't these things smolder and stink things up after being on for awhile?
Turned out a bad set of spares too. So to me the cold just creates another factor working against you (as if there aren't enough already) when trying to turn out a good smoke.
Besides I am just tired of having to go out in the cold. I think I am getting fed up with this part of the country. [IMG]
  9. My ecb is going great now but I agree about using to much lump. My wood smoker is just going to have to sit until spring.

I'll contribute a dumper from here too!
  18. Hell you can have several bomber loads from here. Hell I'll even through in the ice at no extra charge, you just have to get it scrapped up off the road and driveway.

    Guess that wasn't too fair,

I didn't mean to give Y'all too much grief, I lived the Columbia Gorge for 17 years and worked in Alaska too so cold weather is nothing new to me. But I sure don't miss it much so y'all have my sympathy.

If it makes y'all feel better, just wait a few months and it will be 115º in the shade and 99% humidity! Houston sucks in the summer.
  20. Jimbo I total here you there and yea those temps suck, I have friends up in the woodlands and have visited them in June and it does suck there, but the beach south of houston is NICE!!!! [IMG] And the gals over at the Hooters in the woodlands are some of the nicest gals I have ever meet for sure!!!!
