Can I replace the temp dial on my Smokintex with a toggle switch to function as a on/off switch
It fluctuates so much (40+ degrees on the high side) that the temp nob is useless IMO.
Im getting a PDI and would like to just install a on/off toggle.
Could someone please recommend what kind and where I can buy one that will plug right in to where the dial is.
By the way, I have already replaced the thermostat once.

Thank you much.

Hi Rimack
Not sure as I don't have that unit, but any on/off toggle switch from local box store or hardware store should fit the (assuming) D hole in the panel.
I am no help on installing your PID or the temp probe.

Stop over at roll call and introduce yourself.

If the stock controller is analog , you should be able to set it to the max setting . Plug the smoker into the PID controller .
What he said.

That or you could just take the pot out of it out completely and just wired it straight thru. There's a few ways to skin a cat.

Hi there and welcome!

Please learn from my mistakes and do NOT buy any plastic switches that are made in China. I ran through 5-6 in my first ever PID build along with other cheap made in China electrical components. They all just burn/meltdown no matter their rating.

I finally got fed up and bought a marine breaker switch rated at 40 Amps and never had a problem again with switches burning up on my PID builds. For $15 this thing will simply just work and never melt down.

The switch part should fit through the hole but may not plug up the entire hole so you may need to get a piece of plastic, sheet metal (aluminum can would work in a pinch) to make as a cover or filler for any gap that the switch would not cover when that round dial is removed. The 2 screws in the picture are to attach the wires to the terminal not to fasten the switch in place.

This is a front mount switch via screws so that would make it super easy and super secure to fasten into place. I believe you will need to buy some M3 mounting screws because I don't think it comes with them. These should work for $2.73:

I can't overstate how much grief you will save if you just spend the $15 on a switch will not let you down and you will never have to think about it again hahaha :D

I looked at their replacement parts. They use a standard thermostat with 2 wires connected to it so as long as your switch has the correct current rating you should be good to go.

Those panel mount marine circuit breakers are nice. I ran across them when I worked on an 80s cabin cruiser electrical system. I used one as a power switch and circuit protection in my homemade Auber powered PID controller, can't beat them.

Oh yeah they are awesome as a power switch like that. The one I listed is 110/120V so for smaller voltage there might be a better fit out there. Just don't get one that will melt on you lol.

I'd probably just bypass the dial with a wire nut being two wires if you're getting a plug and play Auber. Unplug the smoker from the Auber and bring the PID inside out of the humidity when not in use.
