Hello all - long time reader, first time poster.

I'm starting my first smoker build. Intend it to be versatile in what we can smoke - from ribs to a whole pig. We obtained a 275 gal oil tank and a boiler expansion tank. We will use the oil tank as the primary, the boiler tank likely as a warming box and secondary upright smoker, both of which will be welded on a boat trailer. We will have a lot of questions, but we have two to start.

1) With the oil tank, what are the opinions on whether to position it upright as it was used for oil and pictured or on its side (one 5' x 48" side toward the bottom). This tank will be the primary tank with intended meat as large as a whole pig. Are there any special considerations or challenges with either option.

2) We intend to use the boiler tank upright placed above the fire box. It's primary purpose is as a warming box. However, we would like to pipe the fire box into this boiler tank, with the ability to close off air flow to either tank from the fire box. Both pipes to the two tanks will not be open at the same time. Measurements for fire box will be determined by cubic space of the oil tank. Is there something we can do with the chimney of the boiler tank to offset the fact that the firebox used is larger than it should be given the boiler tank's volume is less than the oil tank?

Lots of questions - thanks!!!
