Has anyone used Sassafrass for smoking. I know one guy who uses it, and his products have a bitter taste. I'm wondering if it is the wood ??? Ernie

Yes, people do use sassafras successfully. Since I don't know the procedure your friend uses, so I can't speak as to why his food has a bitter taste.

Does the bitter taste make the lips and tongue numb? Is so, that is creosote caused by poor combustion of the wood. Could be that there isn't enough air getting to the wood and/or the exhaust vent is closed down not letting the stale smoke exit the cook chamber.
