Looks like Im having rotator cuff surgery end of this month, apparently I have a couple bone spurs chewing up my rotator cuff and have a cyst that has formed in some ruptured cartiledge in the same shoulder.

Those that may have gone thru it A) how long before you could start doing anything and B) how lobg was your total recovery.

Surgery is scheduled the Friday before Tgiving, will I be any help to my wife that week?

Have had that surgery! My advise is to take it slow at after surgery! I didn’t and made my recovery worse than it should have been!

Let the tendon heal for 4-6 weeks! I didn’t and pay the price!

Depending on the severity of the tear… recovery is likely four months for a smaller tear and six for a bigger tear!

Get with a good Physical Therapist, follow their instructions… PT is huge in recovery… follow it thru!

I have not had rotator surgery but have a partial tear in mine. Be interested in responses. Also have a partial tear in labrum in same shoulder. I had a major tear in labrum in other shoulder and it was a miserable rehab. Had surgery for acl in left knee and cartilage and meniscus in right and shoulder recivery was worse than both those. I doubt you will be helping for the holidays.

My rotator cuff is more chewed up than torn because of the bone spurs

Any suggestions for what I should have at home post surgery. Have a recliner to sleep in, bought some waterless shampoo and body wipes today in prep.

What else did yiu have or wish you had after yiur surgery?

My wife had shoulder surgery about a year & 1/2 ago. She couldn't even move her shoulder for a good 3 weeks or more. Then in total probably 4 months give or take till she was back to normal. She did good and didn't over do it. Like Justin Rafter H BBQ Rafter H BBQ said , that's what will get ya. Hope it all goes well & you heal up fast.

Sorry for what your having to go thru…

If in a recliner… I lived in mine for a long while… my regret was not having invested in a neck pillow! Looking back… that would have been a game changer…

Also, a soft pillow to lay under your sling when your able to move it slightly… allows for a bit of air flow that is helpful.

If I think of anything else I will pass along…

Good luck and wishing you a speedy recovery!

Mine was the same , but I did have a tear on the bottom . He told me that to fix it he would have to cut the muscle from top to bottom , then sew it back together bottom to top .

Said my strength would be better if he didn't do that . The bigger problem was the damage from the top .
Throwing bundles of metal studs on my shoulder just pulverised the muscle and the bone was frayed / crushed . The frayed bone was cutting the muscle and everything else it touched .
So he scoped it to fix it . The fix was cutting all the pulverised muscle out , and grinding the bone smooth . Lost about an inch off the top of my right shoulder .

will I be any help to my wife that week?
No , or I doubt it . They put a nerve blocker in my neck . A shot to deaden the pain . He told me to take the meds from the start . Of course I didn't do that . Had the surgery on a friday . Sometime overnight the following Tuesday it wore off . Worst pain of my life , and i can take a lot . I mean I curled up in a ball and wanted to cry .

I had to sleep in a sitting position after that , and taking the meds put me out of commision for anything else .

Just listen to what he tells you , follow the rehab , and DON'T push it . Mine took 6 weeks to return to work ( limited ) and years to be right . I was doing the same job that caused it , so that plated into the recovery .
Good luck .

Yea... you might as well tell the misses right now that you will be of no help mostly... Sure you'll have one arm but using the other will be a no no .....

I would have ice for the ice bath pump. Also button up very loose fitting shirts. Lotsa patience as it is a slow recovery.

This. The ice box is essential. My dad had both done and with using the ice box he had almost no pain. Insurance won't pay for one so be bought one.

I overlooked this and is completely valid! That is legit and I’d recommend as well! Can’t believe I forgot to pass that on!

Wish you the best! Haven't had it but friends have... like others have said... don't over do it and follow orders from Dr and physical therapist.

Never heard of the " ice box " I had a sling that had a pocket for an ice pack .

If I remember correctly, I think my wife used one similar to this... the guys are right this was a key part of it, it seemed
