I've use barrels for my pits almost all my life. The one thing I have never done is paint or repaint one simply because I got the barrels for nothing and the pits were simple enough to replace.

Now a days I only use new barrels. They come with the shiny black paint on the barrel part and a white top. My question is, on a low temperature smoker barrel, do can I just rough out the existing paint and repaint it or should I burn the existing paint off, sand and paint?

Scuff n paint, high heat paint not necessary!
