Hello from the great part of California, Redding. I just found this site a couple of days ago but I have been putting my new (6 months old) GOSM (the little one) through it's paces. I currently have in my first fatty, found out about that here, hamburgers, and an assortment of sausages all while drink an ice cold Bud. I love the fourth. I am having trouble keeping by GOSM at 225-250 since it is 111deg here today. I am not even sure if I have the propane on anymore. I have always had a problem w/ my GOSM being to hot but turn the tank on only 1/3 of turn works for me. Anyway, love the site and info and I am looking forward to learning a lot and sharing what I figure out on my own.

have a wonderful and safe fourth of July!!!

Just read the header at the top of the roll call page.
Name is Perry
I would say I am just a little more advanced than "just learning". I have had my GOSM for under a year but before that I did alot of experimenting on the grill doing tri-tips and chips in a boat.
I into shooting things with my camera or my gun.
Married w/ kids
and i love long walks on the beach during the sunset.....oh wait, to much info.

Oh yea, I hate the terms "newbie" and "far-nor-cal" but it get the point across. If I say northern california. I always get in return "oh, san fransisco?".. aahhhahh NO!
Welcome to the forum. I look forward to sharing with you. Don't hesitate to ask questions or to get to know the friendly folks here.
Welcome aboard. Have the same temp control issues with my GOSM. Been using sand as a heat sink in the water pan, an idea passed on by bbq bubba, and it seems to help. Also had to get an umbrella for over mine to help reduce the heat island effect I was getting in the upper half of my unit.
Will be passing through Redding on Sat. on my way to Shady Cove, Or. and some vacation.
Look forward to hearing about your smokes and seeing lots of Q-view.
atleast you will be used to the heat as you come up the valley floor since you are from pheonix. We just spent two months in phoenix at st. josephs hospital. Daughter had brain surgery there. We are glad to be home and doing wonderful.

They are doing construction on the pit river bridge (I5 over Shasta lake) expect delays during peak hours. they say there maybe an hour+ delay. not sure if I believe them. Do not do it at 4pm. it will be hot.
Turning the tank valve will make no difference in the burner temp. Tank pressure varies with temp outside. The valve on the tank dumps the same pressure into the regulator. ( @111 degrees about 100 to 120 p.s.i.) The regulator on the grill drops the pressure to 11 to 14" Water column (about 1/2 p.s.i.) the temp control on the GOSM controls the flow of gas which controls the heat the burner puts out. I have been in propane service for 13 yrs.
That is what I thought but it makes a huge difference in mine. Maybe i have a bad regulator or I crank it even lower than what the regulator does. not sure why but it does and i agree it should not
