New smoker - novice griller

I just bought my first smoker and I'm trying to learn the art of smoking meat. I had a propane grill I used for years and it finally died. When I shopped for a new one I didn't want the normal stainless steel grill that everyone else had I wanted that natural wood flavor. So after talking to a friend of mine I bought a Char-Griller Super Pro with the side fire box. After seasoning it I cooked my first rack of baby back ribs. They turned out ok but I had it too close to the heat and a flare up came into the main grill and burned one side of the rack. I will do some reading before i waste another rack.

Congrats VW! Welcome to the nutt house! Once you get hooked, smoke'n is all you'll think about. Sounds like you got a good smoker. Alot of people have them and love'm.

You didn't "waste" those bbribs. It's all a learning process. I've messed up so many times that I think the dog has a cholesteral/heart problem. She gets fed well when I mess up.

You'll learn alot from these guys/gals, they are all top notch.

Keep smoke'n, and never say "oops". I found out its not "burnt", its "bark". Some of my "bark" could pass as charcoal, both in looks and taste. :)

Welcome to the forum vwmann. Check out the 3-2-1 Rib Method posted under the Smoking Links section on the left. There are others here who use the same smoker and will be along to help you with tricks and mods to keep those flare ups from biting you. Just remember, Read, Practice, and eat.. that's what it's all about.

Keep Smokin

Wellcome to the forum, I am also new to this forum. One thing that helps me on a long smoke is a couple of GOOOOOD CIGARS! Enjoy.

Great to see you coming in a posting a few little messages. I've been thinking on getting the same grill you have, thought it was a good one. There are tons of tips here and for sure take the 5 day course. It sure helps out tons also. Also under the forum you can find charcoal smokers and read up on alot there also. More great help.
And again great to see you here and hope each smoke is better than the last.
