Was always gonna try just putting wood chips on top of the RT diffuser and see if that would smoke at all. Next go-around, have been using MES lately.

Running at the lowest temp the grill will run at for the first hour or two will get you more smoke flavor. Pellet grills make the most smoke at lower temps so running it low at the beginning will create more smoke flavor.

I looked into it and passed. not sure its a good idea. I assume the goal is more smoke flavor? if so more details please. what pellets are you using? have you tired the low setting for an hour or two? I have messed with the feed rate occasionally when its super hot and smoking like a phycho (previous address-not here in the mtns). rec teq dual fire? i havent looked in this model - have you talked to rec teq? they are usually very helpful, they may have some tips.

Yes, more smoke flavor. This is my second pellet grill with a gravity fed charcoal smoker in between this and the last one so I have used several brands and really can't tell a lot of difference. I'm adding chips to the tube and that helped on my Thanksgiving turkey, but still not the same as an offset stick burner. I know someone has bought one of these or they wouldn't be on the market and I'm trying to find them. Thanks for the replies.

Anytime you smolder wood you are going backwards.
What wood pellet wood are you using? That is hickory, pecan?
Have you tried using a higher rack?

Thanks for your reply, but smoldering wood is what causes smoke, so I'm not sure what you mean. The next phase after smolder is a flame. I'm using mesquite pellets mostly. I generally use a large steam table pan to catch dripping and grease with a cooling rack on top, so I'm already pretty elevated.

Smoldering wood makes white smoke. Not good. A near clear blue smoke is perfect.
My pellet smoker is a reasonable second to my wood burner

yes i have two of them, they work good its hard to tell if i got more smoke flavor as i only use one set of the wood chunks that were provided, i think over a long smoke session if you feed it lots of wood chunks you would get a better flavor profile.... my biggest difference in smoke flavor is the bella cold smoke generator although its a pain int he ass and the pellet swell up its does give lots of smoke flavor. my smoke daddy pellet hopper also have a smoke mode which make a huge difference if i leave it one for 2-4 hours.
