I had the incredible pleasure of taking a young gentleman fishing for the first time ever last Saturday. I must say I have never had so much fun. The pure look of joy on his face was incredible. Let me introduce you to Toby my nephew. He came down from Minnesota to visit me over the holidays. I put him onto the best file fish and pinfish fishing you have ever seen.

He had so much fun I had a hard time getting him to let go of the pole so I could get it ready to fish. Forgive me though I did cheat. I did not go 100 percent artificial with him yet but used sabikis tipped with a little shrimp. It may have been a little much to get him to work a jig. :)

Nothing beats taking a kid fishing and passing the expierence on. Getting them "hooked"(pun intended) on something besides video games.

As the Southern Sportsman used to say "Do your self a favor, take a kid fishing."

Great job(don't think it's work) Valp. I remember the great times teaching my children and grandchildren to fish. Your pic brought back some great memories.

Happy new year

I know I'm new to this forum, but the picture made me think of the first fishing trip with my nephew many years ago....It was a hot, hot, summer day in L.A.(Lower Alabama) when my nephew, his Dad and I went out to let the boy catch his first bream (pan fish). Fishing was not that great that day and nephew had a problem keeping his hook still long enouth to catch a fish. So Dad got him busy in front of the boat, and I hooked a good size live bream on his line while he wasn't looking, put it in the water.....the fight was on, what fun it was! Nephew now is in his late 20's, but still remembers the fishing trip with "Unck".....He never knew the whole story, and I'm not telling!!!

It was definitely one of the most enjoyable times I have ever had fishing! The smiles on his face with each fish were wonderful. We had so much fun with it that people just stopped and watched and they shared in our laughs and smiles.

The laughs and smiles are priceless. Can't wait for my grand son to get alittle older.

Vlap,
Great post! I can tell that it won't be too long before you'll be taking him out for some Red Snapper and arm bruising Grouper. Makes some great memories. I took my youngsters and now take my grandchildren. Indeed, wonderful memories.

As far as I know he has not stopped talking about it yet. I know I will have a long lasting memory. I hope I have made such an impression on him!

He is a cute lil guy. He wasn't going to let the pole go. Next year we can go after bigger fish!!! I hope bigger smiles as well.

I missed this thread... Thanks for the head's up! Cheating..I'm not sure what ya mean...I'm sure it references something sooo esoterically fishing I would not understand.

But how can it be "cheating" when producing such a smile?!?

More POINTS! Wheee! <Snail on turtle's back, yanno.>

Oh yes.. using live bait or dead bait is considered to be cheating in some of the fishing groups I am part of. They are strictly artificial. Kinda like using the oven to finish a smoke ;)

I missed this thread too..
What a cute nephew Vlap!! Sounds like you had the perfect day!

sometimes...yes. Like I stated before, even to Mizz Cowgirl... the oven is just another tool.

When conditions are not conducive to a complete off the smoker serving, I sometimes employ the oven. OR... admit it purists! A cooler.
