meat grinders question

Has anyone used a kitchenaid stand mixer meat grinder. My girlfriend loves to bake and its time to step up and buy a good mixer and would like to know if the grinder and stuffer is worth this set up being purchased. Thanks in advance for all responses.

If your GF loves to bake, a kitchenaid is indispensable!!!

Regarding grinding, I agree with bmudd - the key is "small batches."  Its not really designed for grinding & stuffing a whole a deer, if thats what you have in mind.  (Yes, I did it several times).  That was too much IMO, I got concerned about the machine.  Does work though, and its an excellent machine.

Good grinder for smaller batches, still with smaller batches I would recommend getting a small designated stuffer.

Love the grinder....did 15lbs of rabbit last night.  Used it on several deer...takes a little longer than some of the others out there but not much.  The stuffer is worthless as you can't get a constant flow.  I bought a 7lb stuffer from gander mtn that works great for stuffing.

I have not just one Kitchen Aid stand mixer at the house but two. We bought one then Ma Dutch's grandmother gave use hers. I use the grinder attachment and if I have batches over 10 pounds, I switch off between mixers to keep the motors from over heating.

The stuffing horns are all right and do a fair job. It helps if you have some one feeding the hopper while you control how fast or slow the casing fill. Too fast and the links will be have lot of air pockets and if too slow the casing will be over stuffed and may blow out on you.  Like others have stated, you'll do better with a dedicated stuffer and have more consistency in your sausage size.

I've used the grinder on my wifes kitchen aide.....got tired of hearing her complain about raw meat and germs and too many owwww my gods.....so i bought a dedicated grinder and stuffer...and i wasnt even making sausage....but am going to be soon....grinder works ok.  not near as fast as a dedicated one, but sufficient....

If you already OWN a stand mixer and just need to buy the grinder attachment AND you're going to be doing 10 lb or less? Sure.

If you also need to buy the mixer as well as the attachment OR are going to be doing more than 10 lb? Get a nice heavy duty grinder.

Either way... get a stuffer for sausage! ;)  You have much better looking products and it's 1000x faster!
