I think it would be great if the members of this forum would start a thread when ever we come across a really good price on meat. If you see Boston Butts, pork shoulders, ribs or anything on sale we should post it and include the price and where it can be purchased. That way other members of this forum in that area can take advantage of the sale price and hopefully save a little $$$$.

A seperate category for good buys around the country..... charcoal, meat, smokers, thermometers, etc. Good idea Foozer !!!

Fantastic idea. Here in Atlanta Ingle's Supermarket has bone in Butts on sale for $.98 per pound. Puttin' an 8.54 pounder on tonight as a matter of fact!!!

I just saw an ad in the Hy-Vee flier. They have bone in pork butts for $.99 per lb.
I am going to stop tomorrow and get 2 or 3.

Hey foozer i like this idea. and wow hyvee price is good, our local fareways are selling them at 1.39.

As rich says, could be another forum and postings could go by state.

Maybe to expand this idea even a little more, could do a web bargain section too.

I'm sure this varies somewhat across the country, but if you've got the freezer space Sam's Club usually has really good prices on pork butts if you buy a case of them (8 butts, about 60+ pounds). A few days ago it was 93 cents a pound in Sioux City, IA.

Homebrew & BBQ
That is how we purchase our pork butts- Sam's Club by the case. We are on our 2nd case since finding this fine, addictive site last spring !!!

Walke Bros. (Claremore, Ok) is selling pork shoulder and butt for $1.10/lb. They have the best meats around these parts in my opinion... the ribs and shoulders I bought were cut today. Got to tour the facility a few weeks ago... clean, well lit, workers had hair up, gloves and gowns... top notch. This wasn't like a planned tour either... I showed up to buy some meat and John (owner) asked if I'd like to see the back. Hope many of you are so lucky.

I agree with posting this elsewhere... the other forum idea sounds good with state or regional subs. Of course, this would likely only apply to chains, and I would recommend that all of you attempt to locate a local butcher. Seriously, waaay better cuts of meat. A little more $$$, yes, just a little, but man, I realy like the quality.

Edit: Oh, when I say way better cuts of meat... I don't mean that the other stuff is bad, but if I showed you one of their ribeye steaks, or filets, or their bacon, etc., you would know what I mean. I'm sure a butt is a butt and a shoulder is a shoulder, but they don't seem to butcher garbage out there, and it really shows when comparing prime cuts to the local grocery store's selection.

around here.........the butcher has gone the way of the dodo bird.......aint none..........the grocery stores don't even get primal cuts........just boxed meat..........bout the only was to find primal cuts is to find a meat locker that just doesn't do custom butchering.........i finally found one.........

Yes , You are so right. If you can buy from a regular butcher, do it. It may be a few cents more per pound, but they can't compete with the national chains, and their meats are deffinately superior. I have found out myself on Briskets, ribs, and Chuck. Many larger chains, especially Walmart have "enhanced" meats. That means injected with water and salt, that means you are paying less for a cut which has a higher content of water and salt. So it really isn't much cheaper.Sam's and Wally's are supplied by alot of the same vendors, and I am not sure about sam's meats, but I am sure about walmarts. I know a butcher who used to work for them. Thats all I will say about that.

I try to get my meats from the ma and pa stores if at all possible, I avoid the chains, even though they are cheaper. I don't want meat that is injected with anything, or pumped up with gasses! Thats just my opinion on that. I am very fortunate to have developed a good relationship with my butchers, and they get samplers all the time! Thats just good for everyone. I don't ask for any discounts other than what they have advertised, but I do get to pick through cases of meat to find what I want. Of course they are standing right there, helping me, and smiling the whole time.

I wish every one of us on this site could have that priviledge!

I think the sale forum is a good idea, especially for merchandise.

There was local butcher half a mile from my house.. but he closed about 6 months before I got my smoker.

There are a couple of chains around here that actually employ butchers.. and they actually cut their own meat.

There is a guy in West Omaha, Dick's Meats, I hear his meat is fantastic but jesus it is not just a few cents more, it's dollars more. Like for a 1.25# of brats @ Walmart it's $3 and there it's around $5.

Now I love good meat, but I can't afford that stuff AND my mortgage. Might have to sell my house...
