Has anyone built a smoker out of an ordinary kitchen stove? If you stripped it down and added a stack and 120 volts you should be good to go. I think the 120 volts would be enough heat to hit 250. Actually, the smaller type ovens would be better and lighter of course. The cost would be almost zero!

Couldn't you just put a wood tray on top of the regular heating element and be able to use all the normal control knobs for temp.

Seems like adding a stack with a adjustable vent of some sort would help with the air flow. Might have to add a few holes some where close to the bottom of the heating chamber to help the air flow a little.

I was wanting to do the same thing but just never got around to it. If I'm off base here with my ideas, please be gentle with me..... :o)

I don't think you will be happy running a 220 volt kitchen stove on 110 volts.
When you drop the voltage by half, you don't get just half the heat.
You get one quarter the heat. Darn!

Do the math. Ohm's law and all that stuff.
P=IE Power = Current times Voltage.

How do I know? I tried it.
