I started this hobby, not by accident. I needed to preoccupy myself due to the smoking habbit i USED to have "cigaretts." This little hobby takes commitment and dedication i know that now. When my guest's eat my delictable fair of food i get the always pleasing OH MY GAWD THIS IS AWESOME!!!!! THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD......so my question is, why when i tell people how long it takes they look at me like i got 5 heads, and say your crazy, but yet you were just sitting down eating, not complaining one i-ota about eating my food. The comments about the time really makes me feel like they don't apreciate the time and dedication it takes, or that i am an idiot for doing this. Do i not mention the time frame's and just say "it was a peice of cake" or just chalk it up to "them" missing out on something totaly and personaly gratifying.

now you know why women wear hi heels and painful clothes...ahhhh...the compliments

I think too many people are used to instant results. They go to a restaurant and in 30-45 minutes have their meal that is "Good". They do not realize the amount of time that these restaurants have put in to preparing the foods. So when you tell them it took 12 hour,15 hours, etc they think that your crazy because it cant possibly take that long.

I have gotten that response too but I just let it slide because I know the reward for dedicating that amount of time to good eats. If they ask you how long it took then tell you if they do not ask just say "Thank you" when they tell you how good it is.

dirtman.........i get the same looks. Been trying to turn one freind onto this hobby. Till i tell him how long some of these smokes take. He sez, NO WAY........i don't have that kind of patience. Silly man.

Just put it all out there, let them know about it. Like the line in my sig says "If you gotta ask, you wouldnt understand. Just shut up and eat it, you'll see what im sayin" You have the right idea about Chalking it up to them missing out on something totally and personaly gratifying. Maybe invite them over for an all nighter and show them how much fun can actually be had while engaging in this crazyness. If they still refuse to see things likeyou/we dopoke 'em with a stick and send them packin. jm2cw

I think I'll have Jeff make up some new SMF shirts that say....

It's a smoking thing.... You wouldn't understand.

Thats should solve your problem. ;)

Hopefully, since they are eating your food, they are not judging you as an idiot. I would hope that what they mean is, wow, I wouldn;t want to spend that much time cooking something, but I am glad YOU did since it tastes awesome.

Like bmudd said, too many people are into instant gratification. The smoker ain't no microwave. There are probably people who would complain about how long it takes to do a baked potato in the microwave.

I find it very relaxing to sit by the smoker fiddling with it and trying to maintain that perfect TBS. I am sure you and most of the folks here also enjoy that -- well, except for you Traeger owners.

Just kidding.

I liken it to sitting in a boat all day waiting for fish to bite. I have also done that on occasion and found it relaxing as well. The big difference is at the end of a day of smoking, I know I will be eating the fruits of my labor. Not so true of fishing.

There are many people out there who will never understand why we do what we do. If you feel that they are indeed judging you as an idiot, don't invite them over for any more Q. If they are good friends and their comments are not really insults but just misguided, just smile knowingly and continue eating.

Easy ta fix, take there smoked goodies away an slap a bologna sammie onta there plate, then say "There, that fast enough fer ya"? Then ask em which they would rather have, that fast sammie er them fine vittles ya put yer heart an soul inta, plus the love of the craft. I thin they will see some light at the end a the tunnel (just don't tell em that light is connected ta a freight train).

It's a labor of love. Not QUITE as bad as childbirth, I gather... ;{) But when that glorious meat comes off and is served, it matters not how long, but only how good.

And yeah..invite 'em over for a brisket smoke, and tell 'em to bring beer. A great night!

I had a friend from Orlando that would say that when he questioned me about time. The next time he came over for dinner, I put the smoked ribs and chicken on the table and told him his frozen hamburger patty would be ready, hot from the skillet in about 10 minutes.
His response

that's a funny story... the same thing happens to me. i always say "it's not that bad, really" but i love to cook/smoke so my opinion is biased.

If they look at you like you've got 5 heads for taking so long to cook it ... wait for the look you get when you tell them you were cooking naked the whole time

Bet they forget all about the time factor
