During this time of year one of my sons works for a fireworks production company. Yesterday they were in the process of setting up a show for a Saturday shoot. Shortly after inserting an electronic ignitor into a 3 inch mortar shell and inserting the shell into the launch tube, the shell suddenly launched. The shell hit my son in the face, breaking his safety glasses and knocking his hat off his head before detonating.

Brian sustained 1st and 2nd degree flash burns to his forehead, nose and upper cheeks. If it wasn’t for the fact that he was sporting a mustache and beard at the time, he would have flash burns to his entire face. The impact of the shell not only broke his safety glasses, it also caused his left eye to swell shut and it left him with one heck of a shiner.

Ma and I always worry when he helps sets up a show and Brian keeps telling us that “We think about what we are going to do, we do it in our minds and then we do it for real; then we double check what we did before moving on to the next shell.

This morning while at the Burn Clinic, Brian was joking with the nurse that his job was a real blast- his warped humor is still intact, Brian is going to be fine.

Wow, Dutch that had to be quite a scare for you and your wife. I'm glad to hear that you son will be ok. I know burns are no fun, I hope he heals quickly.

Sorry to hear about your sons accident, glad to hear he will be fine.

Call me old but I do not playing with fireworks. A good friend of mine does the same as your son and I have always wondered if he will have an accident.

Sorry to hear about your son's accident. Glad to hear he is going to be fine. I learned my lesson holding roman candles...

Thank god he is ok, unfortunately he will have to suffer for a bit. Also, cudos to him for wearing his, what we call PPE at Waste Management. We can not stress enough how important it is to wear safety gear while on the job. Hope he has a speedy recovery dutch

Dutch, good ta hear the boy is gonna be ok, used ta hep with the fireworks in a small town near us years ago, it's not if yer gonna get hurt but when.

Glad he had his gear on, ya tell him ta keep safe an glad he got a good attitude bout thins.

Glad to hear he is going to be ok those things often are not fun for the people setting them up or firing them off.

I too am glad he'll be OK. I had a run-in with a table saw a few weeks ago and after 5 hours in the ER don't want to do that again. I'm still out of work for making knives! Be careful!

Glad to hear your son is gonna be fine. It's a testament to his mindset that he kept his game face on after the incident and kept his safety equipment handy.
I have too. Never bothered renewing my certification. Something similar happened to me 4 years ago. Little 1st and 2nd degree burns peppering my back and left arm. Like I said, if he gets back on the horse or not, testament to his mindset. Heres to a speedy recovery...
he probably already knows, but nudge him to use what ever precautions the meds give him. Those powder burns really like the company of infection...

Thanks for all of your well wishes. Yeah, he's ready to get back on the horse TrashCan, he's already talking to his boss about the three shoots that they are doing next week.

Geez, as I read along I was horried at the out come, could have been much much worse.

Glad he will be ok.

Thank God your son is somewhat ok. As working with all class's of explosives is my livelyhood I know the effects of pre-detonation. We always use the method EBB (Electrical Before Ballistic) using safety tubes. Insert the detonator in safety tube, attach to power source, and then insert to gun, cutter,or similar explosive device. IF the detonator ignites when hooked up it is in safety tube not explosive device. I do not know the measures the production company uses but tell your son to stay out of the LINE OF FIRE from now on. Once again I am glad he is not critically injured.
