Is it crud or micro-flavor enhancers?

There's been some recent q-views that have shown some mighty clean grills/grates in the background. Caused me to go out and compare mine to these shiny examples. When I actually got down and looked, what I saw was something that was more of a fur coat of sorts, surrounding my grates. In fact, I don't think there's any exposed cast iron. It's covered in two years of rubs-n-spritz-n-sauce-n-mops-n-beer-n-whiskey-n-anything that's crawled in there and died. So here's my question: Should I work to unearth the iron grate or leave it as is to continue to add whatever flavor it might impart?

Uh....dude, time for a new grill brush cause that one ain't workin...

I like a lil flavor on my grates but you have surpassed that and then some...
Time for a good cleaning, might be amazed at how the flavor of your meat comes out!

Most of that should scrape off. I'm with bbq bubba, I like to have some flavor on the grates. I use my CGSP as a grill about twice a month, building the fire in the main chamber. That seems to keep the grates tolerably clean.

Hope this helps!

Take care, have fun, and do good!

Wow! In a little while that will be like sheet metal!! Knock that sucker against a tree a couple of times!

I just happened to clean my grates yesterday and it hasn't been a couple years heck I'm with them clean em and see if it makes any difference

You ever post something that, once you think about it, you regret? Dang, I look like a complete moron for leaving 'em that long. Just spent the last hours soaking, scrubbing (alum foil), soaking, and scrubbing again. They're nice and shiny now. Got 'em seasoning now too. The crud was easily a cm thick in some places. Now that I've chucked the crud, i feel a bit empty. it's sorta like saying good bye to old friend. Ha! Can't wait to try it. thanks all.

HOLY COW!!!!! Take a Culture of that and have it tested :)
You probably have a new stain of bacteria living there.. J/K....

Thanks for posting.. You make me feel better about mine.
I try and scrub it every year. I use the wire brush almost every time I use the smoker to help keep it some what clean..
