I remember a thread where someone mentioned having a soldier over for Thanksgiving dinner. Is there somewhere you can sign up for that? I and my family thought it would be a nice thing to do for a soldier who can't go home.

If you are near a military base call the base info number and I'm sure they can put you in touch with the right people. Thanks!!

I know what its like to be stuck on base with no where to go for the holidays. Not fun. Also after the mess hall gave the entire battalion dysentery I was thankful never to have to eat that food again. It was a messy night after that meal.

Ya Know The Worst Part Of It Is The Ones Who Would Really Need This Are Over Seas

Overseas needs it, but they are with their "adopted" family. They are all in the same boat. When I was in, there were many who didn't get to swoop home for the holiday. One of my best Thanksgiving dinners was cooking dinner for about 30+- guys that couldn't make it home. I lived in a 2br trailer at the time. We had no room for anything! We had to ice the beer down in the tub! Had food platter set up anywhere you could find a flat space. Afterwards we played football out front, then moved the tv outside so everyone could watch some football...If not for that, those guys would have been sitting in the barracks by themselves...Felt good about myself that day!

Shell, That is an awesome story and so great of you to have done it. I know it would have made me feel good a few times while I was in the service.

No thanks needed. The words are heartfelt. I have an idea of how you feel. When we were going to invade Haiti I was put into lockdown where noone could get in or out as we preped for the invasion. My parents were not able to reach me for over a week. Then on the evening of the invasion the first wave too off from macdill afb in tampa. My parents were eating dinner on the porch when 30 c-130s flew directly over the house. All they could do was watch the planes fly by and wonder if thier son was on one of them on his way to war.
Lucky for us the invasion was called off and we returned home. Parents said it was a very scary feeling.
I hope and pray that our soldiers return home soon.

every few weeks or so I hear those c-130s and will see about 4 or 6 of them fly right over our house over and over and I will call my DH at Peterson AFB, and say, whats going on I hear the C-130's, and he always says, everything is OK, just practicing flying. He nows calls the house and before they take off to let me know. Olny because of 9-11 I have done this. If I see an airliner flying too low I get scared. My DH says it only looks low to me, that it is OK. I know I drive him crazy.

Sorry to hijack your thread, I think I got off course (no pun intended) but the invite to the troops to have someone over to dinner is a wonderful idea!! We have Schreiver AFB, Peterson AFB, the USAFA, and Fort Carson here within minutes of us. We could have a huge party with a smoke fest...lol. That would be something cool to pull off.

mmmmm.....

After further research I was able to get this information: "MSgt Lisa Snyder, the president of the Buccaneer Chapter of the Air Force Sergeants Association, I was informed that due to the public response all service men and women have been taken care of."

All the good men and women serving around here are already taken care of. Glad to know this area is so very supportive of its service men and women.

A friend of my son, a former Marine is coming for dinner, does that count?
Here in about an hour I'll be joining up with fellow American Legion Riders & Patriot Guard Riders for a surprise send-off for a local man who's shipping out to Iraq early next week. God bless him and hope he returns safely.

Great Story Shell! I remember those days too. Holidays always seemd so empty when your a million miles from home.

We got a group together one Thanksgiving at my apartment. One of those two room studio deals with a bathroom. We were all 18 an 19 years olds going through "A" school to learn what our jobs would be for the next 4 to 6 years, and none of us had a clue what we were doing.

I bought a turkey about 10 pounds I think and each of my buddies brough a some kind of veggies or store bought pies. We did a turkey and taters and other stuff. We didn't have a big knife to cut the turkey with so we used our Navy issued TL29s! For those that haven't seen them they're stainless steel pocket knives with one wide blade about 3.5 inces long, one small screw driver blade a can opener, a small shank and a small file. I guess that was the prelude to the multi-tool they have now adays. It wasn't pretty - looked more like one of those old time Reniasance things but it was good and all were fed. Those we the days!

Thanks for the memories Shell! Big Higs!

Happy Thanskgiving to all!

A military base with all its programs to help a solider out is the loneliest place on earth during a holiday if your stuck there.God bless all the men and women who aren't with loved ones today. My oldest daughter went with her boyfriends family out of state today for their gathering. This is the first year one of mine is not here for Thanksgiving dinner and I miss her something fierce.I guess this is something Ill have to get used to,just part of being a father I guess, but I do miss her.

Yeah holiday stink without your family around but there's so many families when they grow up you have to share. She's a sweet kid I feel you pain hon!

Big Hugs!
