Last years doe after gutting was at the very edge of my heave ho ability into the back of the truck
When I used to hunt with my dad, I'd have him drop me off a mile or two from our campsite, and then I'd hike back alone. Learned the hard way that that wasn't really optimal if I bagged a deer too far from a road. Of course back then, even carrying knives and firearms, and having dried blood up to your elbows, didn't deter kind folks from picking up a hitchhiker and giving him a lift back to camp.

Daughter tagged out on Saturday evening on a button buck. Two years, two tags, two bullets, two deer-working out pretty well. She only sat that evening with me (regular gun), was slow until all he!! broke loose in the last 5min of shooting light. Doe and big fawn came out, smaller buck came out and ran them off into the brush then either that fawn came back or it was a different one we didn't see and she decided she wanted to shoot it because she didn't want to risk not getting another chance, she shot it and when it ran I noticed another nicer buck was coming out but I didn't have a chance to shoot it. Her deer ran maybe 75yds at most, she learned how to trail blood (last year was a bang flop, literally) and we were able to walk right up to it. 6.5 Grendel that I worked up a hand load with Hornady 123 ELD-M. Very happy girl that night

Congrats to her! Tracking is so important and I'm surprised how little people actually know about it or how to do it properly. It is good for her to get that experience.

Since i bag multiple meat deer a year I have figured out a clever way to mount my phone to the rifle scope so I can take a wide video shot to help with tracking. It has been a HUGE bonus in picking up the initial impact site, accurately seeing path taken (behind that rock, infront of that cactus, etc.) and seeing where the animal left the field of view.

With that said... I left the mount at home this year but had the phone propped up enough to catch impact location and about 25yds field of view and it helped greatly with 1 of the 3 deer I took this year hahaha.

Again, congrats to her and I look forward to hearing about the good eating to come :D

All but one of our target bucks broke their antlers all to hell and back - two lost their main beam. Good deal - sort of - because they should live until next season and even be bigger and better.

This target-buck is a nice old 8 point, in decline from prior years - seemed to peak at 4-1/2. Drought has been bad here - until recently - probably had a lot to do with this. My son got him this morning. He weighed out at 208 lbs.

Nice! It looks good to me!

Thanks guys, he tries not to care because he prefers waterfowling but the smile gives it away.
I passed on this guy a week before. I just didn't feel comfortable with any shot while hung out for about 30 minutes. The day Logan shot him, I was headed out but he said he was going, so I stayed home so he a more uninterrupted woods. That picture was 50 yards from where I've sitting. So one of us most likely would have gotten him that day no matter. Glad his spoiled ass got it though......:emoji_wink:
