Well I got a smoker for my birthday. It's a Brinkmann. I made some modifications to it to work better per a website that I found. So today I am trying to smoke a pork tenderloin for my first use of this smoker. I already figured out I built way too hot of a fire.

Any suggestions to how much charcoal to start with?
I am adding hickory wood to smoke with.

Same question as ITB, what kind of rig?

On the other hand, welcome to SMF! Lots of help available for ya once we know your rig type as different methods apply to different smoker layouts (i.e. horizontal vs. vertical). Good luck, and hope we can help!
