I see Lone Star Grillz advertising small wood chips to mix with pellets for their grills. They have a disclaimer saying they don't know how they work with other grills. I don't think Lone Star has a monopoly on auger technology. Has anyone out there tried these oak wood chips?

I own a Lonestar Grills 20 x 42 Pellet Smoker. Lonestar Grillz has both Oak and Hickory wood chips. I use both! I mix two parts LumberJack pellets to 1 part wood chips and get great smoke volume. I mix the Hickory chips with LumberJack Hickory, Competition Blend, and Mesquite. I mix the Oak wood chips with Pecan Shell pellets and LumberJack Fruitwood pellets. I have no experience using these wood chops on Pellet Smokers other than Lonestar Grillz so I can't recommend one way or the other. I can tell you that Wood chips are uniform in size and the blend burns clean.

It’s hard to say how well it will feed in the screw. I have wood chips left over from when I used a smoke box on my gas grill, I might try to use them like you would in a smoke tube.

IF the wood pieces are the same size as the pellets I dont see why it wouldnt work. That being said, I wont try it on mine first. Well not until I am ready for a new one.

Bigfurmn,
When I said the wood chips are uniform in size, I did NOT mean they are uniform in size to wood pellets. What I meant was the wood chips are uniform in size.

Both are made of wood and both have been heat treated, probably not much difference in the smoke profile
True, I am just thinking of fitting through the auger tube. Too big and it will jam the auger. Usually a long pellet is just snapped off by the auger but I am not sure how a "solid" piece of wood would handle it. I wouldnt want to break my grill to find out is all.

Come on, somebody has to have an old cheap pellet burner out there that could be used to experiment with!
I'd jump on it quick if they are easily digestiable auger wise..

I ordered a box. I am going to try them in my GMG Daniel Boone. Feedback to follow.

Mine wasn't cheap, so I ain't being the guinea pig.

This has been tried before with mixed results. Many had the shear pin snapped in their auger. I would mix them with pellets in a smoke tube and call it done.

This was the first one in a search. (Look at the comments section.)
